Prof. Carney is absolutely brilliant and an unbelievably kind and helpful professor, he truly cares about his students and was always helpful when I would seek his perspective during office hours. A wonderful prof I highly reccomend - easily one of the most down to earth at McGill and one of the brightest scholars I've studied with!

One of my favourite teachers at McGill. His classes aren't easy, but they're always interesting and he cares about the subject matter.

Prof Carney is great. I look forward to his lectures because he's so personable and likes to trail off into tangents and funny anecdotes. The material is straightforward and you can definitely succeed if you keep up with readings and lectures.

Tries too hard to come across as wise and relatable at first impression, turned out to be highly unprofessional and and out of touch with reality. maladjusted professor tbh naive

Super interesting class. A lot of reading (despite the fact that they are comic books), but definitely worth it. I recommend going to see him with ideas before handing in a paper (he gives good feedback). I was a first year taking a 400 level class and I managed to go okay.

Prof. Carney is one of my favourite profs so far at McGill. He's extremely kind and down-to-earth, and he loves hearing what students have to say. His lectures are fascinating, and office hours discussions with him are even better. He'll give you the mark you deserve. To top it all off, his acerbic wit will consistently improve your day, every day.

It is a very interesting class, the readings are pretty good for the most part. All plays obviously, so they're short reads which is nice. He's a very animated and enthusiastic lecturer. Unfortunately he's not very clear about what he expects in papers, so its not easy to get a good mark. Based on 2 5/6 page papers, final exam and conference.

I have taken ENGL 314, 355, and 465 with Carney. Don't listen to the people who say he is difficult. He is much easier and more interesting than literature profs. He is always open to new and different opinions. You'll learn a great deal in his classes. He is a great guy and very respectful of students and their work.

The hardest English class I've had in McGill...although it's also the first time that I take drama. He's very eccentric and entertaining. He doesn't use powerpoints, so it's essential that you attend his classes to take down notes. Very hard grading on the papers. It was the first time that I have gotten below a 70 on a paper. And I worked HARD!

Carney is a fantastic prof! He is incredibly helpful and his classes are very interesting. Don't listen to the negative reviews of him posted below. If you actually ask his classes what they think of him, over 95% would give you a very positive review of him! I took ENGL 314, 355, and 465 with him.

Carney knows what he's talking about, he just fails at sharing it in his long-winded, disjointed lectures that don't even help for the papers you turn in. Entertaining yes, but helpful he is not. Attendance to boring classes is mandatory. Hope you're not in the morning.

Thought he was going to be interesting but was actually rather boring. Not sure what he expected from us in terms of papers. At times not even sure what the point of the readings were.

Thought he was going to be great but treated us like children. Never knew what he wanted from us in our papers, just seems to pull a grade out of thin air. Talks a lot in a way that tends to hinder the discussion. The class was depressing. I was disappointed. He seems like a nice guy, though.

Laughed a lot in lecture. He's not a brilliant scholar (has two or three big ideas and stays within them the whole course) but he gets what's bitingly funny about modern plays, and his lectures were a pleasure to attend. Great, interesting readings choices. Very little theory. Reasonable workload, good grader. Carney's a good guy.

First, contrary to other responses to material was NOT difficult; it was painfully easy, and the intuitive-emotional readings were pointless. Either he does not know his theory or thinks that a atheoretical readings of emotional symbolism are scholarly.
