Dr.Heine is a real cool guy & understanding. I'm just a bit discouraged because I earned a B+ ,which I taught I was gonna get an A. The class is tough. Ton of papers, book reading, & very long pdfs. The exams are written but provides a guide. Overall, I enjoyed the class. It's a research methods course. I would take Heine again.

Prof's specialty is Ancient Japanese literature, which does not qualify you as a people person or a professor capable of interacting with your students. This man has a communication problem, he interrupts students and makes belittling comments. While the program has many excellent professors, this socially-hampered & rude prof is not one of them.

uses own publications for textbooks to make money, test are useless, the only reason he gets students to take his class is because he makes it a required course in his own program.

AMAZING PROFESSOR! There's a reason this guy is the head of our Asian Studies Department. But he interrupts students A LOT! It's kind of rude. A ton of books, papers, and powerpoints, but it's interesting! He gives you midterm and final essay questions ahead of time so you know how to answer. If you want to really learn about Asia, take this class!

Does not respect students. Very rude. Doesn't pay attention to student final project presentations just plays with blackberry. And then gets mad when he doesn't like your topic.

We were required to read six entire books, take two midterms, a final presentation and paper. It was a lot of work, but I also learned the most in this class compared to the others this semester. Heine is a nice guy and is very smart. Lots of discussion among entire class is involved.

Silk Road Then/Now - This class is the most time consuming class that I have ever taken. The class is not designed for lazy people, and encourages a lot of class discussion, research, and tons of reading. Dr. Heine is a fair grader, but can be overwhelming the first weeks of class. If you truly want to learn about Asia, and do research, take him!

He's a very nice professor and obviously has a lot of knowledge. The class really wasn't that hard. Take-home midterm and final. However, you do have to do a presentation on one of the readings and a presentation for your final paper which is around 9 to 12 pages. You actually end up learning some things here, unlike other FIU classes. I got a B.

Professor Heine has a great deal of knowledge about Japan and Asian cultures. He has high standards, but is a fair grader. Exams are take home essays, so if you didn't do well, then you probably didn't work hard enough or follow the instructions.
