Great professor who genuinely cares about what she teaches. However, this is not an easy course and you must go to class, take notes, and study hard to pass the exams.

Fantastic professor. Cares deeply about the subject as well as her students. It was not the easiest course, but if you take some time to learn the material, the class is not difficult at all. Definitely take this course if you have the opportunity! You will be glad you did. As per the class: all lectures, a few projects and readings, and exams.

She is a very nice professor and really cares about her students, however DO NOT take this class for Miami Plan. The amount of time that you have to study/pay attention in class is not worth it if your major isn't related. There are much better/easier options and if I could have the choice again I wouldn't take it. Way too hard for a music class.

Super awesome and interesting lectures, she loves what she does and is very knowledgable. When she does her lectures she speaks from what she knows and barely follows the powerpoints so you have to be in class to know what's going on.

Her tests are a little tough, but if you ask questions to understand more, you will do fine. While you don't necessarily have to read, it is definitely helpful on the exams and in-class discussion. I loved her classes and would take it again

She is a great professor who is passionate about her subject. I enjoyed her class and learning about the history of jazz-BUT it is a history class, not a music class. Almost no music theory. Tougher than expected. She wants you to get two books-I only had the 'Blues People' book and didnt feel like I needed the other one. You will need to study.

Dr. K is such a great prof! You can definitely tell shes passionate! Every class is a lecture and attendance is common. The tests are mainly multiple choice with some short answer and listening questions! Not an easy A, and sadly youll be lucky to get an A! Fun class, passable, but expect to work more than normal for A! Take Dr. Tammy Kernodle!

Love this woman. Very gifted. She was super nonchalant about being featured in a documentary about women in jazz called "The Girls in the Band". Very humble and hilarious. Compassionate. Lively spirited. So many honors and awards. She worked with the Smithsonian. Gosh. She's the best. And a talent for the piano that will make you envy. Good times.

One of the best teachers that I have gotten the chance to have, and also one of the most inspirational. Not only was she an amazing teacher, she is also an amazing person who clearly cares about each and every one of her students. HIGHLY recommend her and this class!

Dr. K is one of the best professors I've had thus far. I am a junior Kinesiology major, and she made me want to take every class that she teaches. She is genuinely willing to help you out with anything you need. The lectures are engaging and she really care about her students. 1000000% would recommend.

While I had no interest in Jazz, this was one of my favorite classes. Dr. Kernodle has been my favorite professor thus far. Her lectures are engaging and she is truly a brilliant, amazing woman. Take this class just to have Dr. Kernodle. It requires a little studying but if you listen and take notes in class it is not so bad. Great experience!

Her grading scale is pretty easy, 88 ends up being an A. I recommend attending class, engaging with discussion, coming to class with readings prepared, and studying for all her exams. Essentially, if you do what you need to do, you will do well. She's a great and knowledgeable professor! I learned a lot from her! She is also funny, and interesting.

Amazing professor! You have to really study for the exams to pass, but take lots of notes in class and you'll be fine. Her lectures are interesting, which makes you actually WANT to go to class. She can be a little tough at times so be prepared for class. Not much homework, couple papers. Few quizzes sporadically, couple exams. Not cumulative.

Was a great professor and although the class wasn't an "easy a", it really is the best choice to fulfill the music requirement. Amazing professor, understanding, nice, helpful.

If you've played an instrument or listen to music a lot, this class will be easy for you. It's mostly just memorizing little facts and being able to pick up on songs. I cram study for 2 hours the day of tests and get A's on all them. As long as you give papers some effort and make some connections to class material, you'll get an A. COME TO CLASS.

Dr. Kernodle is an amazing woman and an even better professor. She understands that there are some people who are not musically inclined and have no background. However, she teachers with a humorous passion that makes every lecture a breeze. She will not give you anything, though. This class requires some work. Well worth it, though,

She's the bomb! I literally think she just started adding points to my grades at the end. I expected a B and ended up getting an A-. You do need to study and do the listening for the tests for a day or two and they aren't bad. The two concert reports are 40% of your grade and huge grade boosters if you write them right! Surprisingly interesting.

She is an awesome and very knowledgeable teacher! She knows so much and makes the class so interesting. But she DOES challenge you with the test. She makes you think critically and hollistically. This class made me totally change my study approach ... But overall for the better. Attendance is mandatory but you won't mind coming to class!
