Take this class for a funny and inciteful professor that knows everything there is to know about Black history. His class is simple and very interactive. Use his coursekey to interact with your classmates to collab on quizlets, test prep, etc. Quizzes are hard but he gives study guides and his tests are kind of hard. 1 class a week isn't bad either

TAKE MERRITT'S CLASS. He's got a sense of humor and he's an easy grader. He's very clear about what he wants in the class, and always has a chill vibe.

Pretty easy class. grade is 4 tests, 4 quizzes, & weekly attendance. He uses coursekey to sign in for attendance, and powerpoints are fill-ins. Offers extra credit. He never lectures the full 2.5 hours, we're usually out after an hour or hour and a half at the latest

Comment:

I took this over RWS200 and it was a great choice. There are probably less than 10 essays and only about 3 are long ones. They are graded easily and he's a pretty cool dude. You also have to take part in in-class debates which are actually pretty interesting and its easy to participate. Overall good choice over taking a boring RWS course.

I just began the course, but I wanted to note on the booklist, it says revel which comes with online homework stuff, but we wont be using that. He only requires it so we can use the ebook part. My advice, if you can find a cheaper version of the African American Oddysey Volume 2, 7th edition, buy it somewhere else. He also requires coursekey app.

Definitely take ANY of his classes. Really funny guy who makes lass fun. Do your work well and you'll get a good grade. For my class he split us up into four groups for our speeches so I only had to show up to class once every two weeks to give a speech. He makes sure no one is nervous before their speech and is genuinely a cool guy.

TAKE THIS CLASS! Best choice I ever made. We were required to write papers that range at about 500-750 words only. We only had class once a week, but definitely come to class because we turn in work there. He is an easy grader. If you do the work, he will give you full points.

Professor Merritt is a good professor, but an even better guy. He cares a lot for his students and wants everyone to do well. It's important to show up to his class because most of his assignments are done in class. Don't forget the book either. He's a fair grader and overall the class was pretty easy.

Great teacher. I took this class on accident but it did cover my RWS 100 and I'll be taking AFRAS 200. The class is easy for the most part and gradually gets a little bit harder as the semester continues, but that's college. He's a great teacher, very interesting and doesn't take up the whole class period.

Reading the reviews Im guessing his history class was hard but BEST ALTERNATIVE than taking a regular RWS. Wrote a lot of papers but hey it's a college english class. Papers were all assigned in a timely manner and he taught well. Put in the work and you will get the grade you deserve.

Doesn't show up to his own office hours lol and His lectures made sense until you get to the test, which didn't correlate at all. Thank God for the extra credit. If you're determined to get an A, don't panic. You still can. Just study hard and do the readings and please please do extra credit its 35 points in a 350 point class

For this class there is no homework. There are just 4 MC exams, which can be pretty hard. To do well, make sure to go to lecture and read the book. He can go fast in lecture, but he will go back and clarify if you ask him to. If he offers extra credit, do it! It's worth a lot, and it will help your grade a lot(it bumped me from a B to an A).

I took this instead of RWS, best decision I ever made. You have little weekly debates and then have to write a short paper on it, as long as you put some effort in he'll give you 100% on everything. He's super nice and willing to help. Easy A.

Dont listen to all these mofos because my friends and I have a D in the class. By far the most challenging class. His lectures are boring af and I fall asleep the majority of the time. And he talks so quietly like hes whispering like hes hiding from the popo and no one hears what hes saying. And the tests are so specific its ridiculous. Dont do it

I could go on and on about how Prof. Merritt made 170B best sections for American Institutions. Tests are multiple choice and easy. Multiple extra credit opportunities that you shouldn't let pass by! I ended up with over 100% on the class. Easy A.

His class was straightforward and to the point which made him my favorite prof of the semester. I didn't think the essays were easy but he provides enough insight and guidelines on how he wants your essays to be so that is what made it easy to get a passing grade. If you are planning to ditch class you won't pass. there is a mandatory book
