Amazing lecturer , I am not an English major and it is quite hard for me to understand literature analysis, but this was the most fun I had during lit lectures and was able to actually like English writing

Dr. Qualls is an awesome professor and human being. I took this class based on the different genres of literature that we would cover and I enjoyed this course thoroughly. Grades are based on close-reading assignments and class participation, the final is also a close-reading assignment. I learned a great deal and had fun doing so!

Unless you LOVE reading a new story every week and writing papers every 2 weeks, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! Barry Qualls is a really nice man, cares about his students, and reminds me of a sweet old grandpa. But, his lectures are long and boring. Some of the stories I liked, but most of them were uninteresting.

You better like to read; novels short stories, and memoirs will become your life for the next semester. It you're interested in the material you'll have a much better time than if you're not, still his lectures are pretty interesting, even if you didn't read. The papers are pretty tough, however there's only five of them and they make up about 80%.

Professor Qualls is one of the sweetest, kindest professors I have ever met. He is passionate about his subject and you can tell that he genuinely cares about his students. His lectures are mandatory for attendance, but you will find that you want to go because he is such an interesting person and an engaging speaker!

Get to know him. His lectures are interesting and the class will only seem un-personal if you choose to not participate. Very helpful prof and was happy to meet with me outside of class & help me get into a closed class next semester. Very funny too. Very personally interested in the class, Why We Tell Stories (his first time offering the class).

User below should be quoted for truth. He stretches out the first four books to almost a month each and then you have to read the other 4+ in a span of about two weeks (finals!). Out of a class of 80, about four get A's per paper assigned. The average class grade is a C. We discuss books mentioned in books and the final is five essays (optional).

While this Professor is certainly one of the most intelligent, articulate, and entertaining porfessors at Rutgers, he is also the hardest to please. He is a very demanding grader, and expects you to read all the books in the class fairly quickly. This is not to say that he should be avoided, but he should be taken with some cautious deliberation.

If you can write, Qualls can be a great connection in your life. He has guided me inside and outside the classroom, and he continues to help me now that I've left Rutgers. He's kind on a personal level and interested in what's right, fun, and beautiful. This makes him come alive when discussing novels. If you can't write, you'll have to learn.

Such a nice guy. Cannot tell you enough exactly how nice he is. However, it's a little rough to get an A on a paper. He's not too easy, but he'll help you in any way possible so you can do better! Always e-mails you back quickly which is a plus, and he's beyond helpful in office hours.

I wish more professors were like Prof Qualls! Honestly the best professor I have ever had. I've run into him on campus @ the Cabret theatre for Godspell and the Film Festival for Writers House because he was there to support his students in their work! I respect him so much for that! I HATED Victorian Lit before I took his class and now I LOVE IT.

Professor Qualls is by far the best prof I've ever had, and probably will ever have. I have never met a man so dedicated to his students. He is extremely accessible and approachable. Anyone who had a bad experience really must have put in zero effort in his class. TAKE HIM no matter what the class is, you will love it (I'm not even an eng major)

Very passionate about British Victorian novels. Very funny and helpful. Engages with students really well. 4, 2-3 pg writing exercises and 2, 5-7 pg essays. Read 6-7 novels for entire semester. Lots of reading. Have to keep up all the readings. If go to weekly discussion session = exempt from finals. Novels are kind of intense and difficult.

The issue with rate my professor is that you will usually only see the love/hate reviews - this rating does not resolve that issue - Prof Qualls is an incredible, enlightening and thoroughly interesting man. He is funny and helpful and truly loves Victorian literature - there is a decent amount of work and reading but nothing to extreme - TAKE HIM
