I was originally not going to take this class but AP world history made me dislike history in general but I'm so glad I took it. The class requires a textbook but I only used it once. If you show up to class, pay attention to his lectures and take good notes, you should be good. He posts a study guide for the tests that is very helpful.

Dr. Beattie really is the best professor at UofL! He makes history interesting and is really funny. He genuinely cares about both student and world history. I cannot recommend this class and professor enough. The tests are not hard if you know the material.

Absolutely amazing! As head of the history department, he is a busy man and he does cancel class at times but you can tell that the man loves what he does. He makes historical figures approachable and gives examples that makes the material interesting and fun to learn. I've had him for 2 classes and I wish that he was my professor for all of them!!

Great teacher. The class is all lectures with 3 tests. He makes the lectures really interesting. Class is not mandatory but if you want to do well on the tests I highly it. Tests are tough because there is so much covered in each unit so you have to study a lot. He gives you a study guide and if you take notes and study them you will do well.

A great teacher just make sure you go to class so you have all the information for your test. There's only three tests so make sure you are studying hard.

He makes history so much more interesting with his funny comments. He gives you a study guide so that helps a lot. No big final exam, but be really do take some serious notes because his power points consist of names and pictures. Your note taking skills are the only thing describing those pictures. Class is just lectures and exams.

He gives amazing lectures! Get ready to write lots of notes though. He often misses class. Also he gives out the study guide the class before so you will not have a lot of time to study. Also he puts maps on the exams so be warned.

I LOVED Professor Beattie! Super nice guy. He is clear with his requirements and as long as you show up to class, pay attention, and take notes - it's not too hard. I never used the book so I wouldn't buy it. No homework and 3 tests including the final. I highly recommend his course.

This professor is amazing. His lectures are very entertaining and I enjoy going to class-even though attendance is not mandatory. His tests are hard, they have fill in the blanks, and you need to generally know dates and timelines-but if you attend lectures and do a bit of studying, you'll be fine.

I'm not a history person in the slightest, but Professor Beattie is most certainly the greatest professor at UofL. Lectures were not mandatory, but he was so entertaining that you never wanted to miss one. Take this class if you can! Never a dull moment with this guy. I'll probably never come across a professor as good as him ever again.

Best history teacher by far. Before this class I hated history. Dr. Beattie made history very interesting. His lectures made a 9am class not bad at all. Textbook is not necessary if you take good notes. I scored well on the first two tests and got exempt from taking the final exam.

Awesome professor. I'm an engineering major so HIST 101 did not interest me at all until he started teaching. Made lecture actually interesting and tests were easy if you take notes. I didn't have to take the last test since I scored well on my first two. Great guy, pretty funny.

Dr. Beattie is hilarious and he actually makes learning history fun. He covers a lot of info in class but is more than willing to repeat any info and answer any questions. You need to study quite a bit for his tests; I recommend take good notes and make flashcards. DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK. Anything you need to know for the test will be in lecture
