He is interesting no doubt. This class specifically, however, seemed to be an survey course secretly. "4 American Novels". Exactly what it says. 4 American novels from the 20th century. discussions can be fun. grades tough depending on how much effort you put in making your argument in your essays. Brought in abstract concepts sometimes confusing.

Professor Evans is really intelligent and into the material, which makes his lectures interesting. There are 3 papers and weekly quizzes (or mini papers), along with an easy midterm and final. The reading is mostly interesting short stories so it's not bad. Stay on track with work and participate in recitation and you'll do fine.

Prof. Evans is very nice and accommodating. He is very helpful and answers questions thoroughly. This class requires a LOT of reading. Attendance is mandatory. There were 3 essays, several quizzes, and a very easy midterm and final exam. He truly cares about his students.

Professor Evans could be seen as pedantic, to some, but in fact he is a great prof. I had him for Realism and Naturalism. He provided challenging assignments and thought provoking material and lecture. What I liked the most is that he did not patronize you if you were wrong, he called you out and was strait up, if you're wrong you're wrong.

Great prof. I had him for a Henry James seminar, and it is evident that he has a real passion for the subject. He works well in the smaller seminar style setting; he's calm and clear. You could really see his passion for teaching coming through. Legit enjoys what hes teaching; makes a dry topic like Henry James a lot more bearable. Take him

Great professor. He loves what he teaches. There's about a quiz every week but they're not hard if you read. Also 2 essays and a pretty entertaining group project instead of a final.

Withdrew from this class after I failed the third reading quiz- after having done all of the readings. I was interested in American Lit before, liked the works we read, and was totally turned off by his teaching style and terrible attitude. He makes no sense with anything he says. Unorganized and it affects his students.

Comment:
Avoid like the plague. His grading system is silly; he still gives quizzes in a 300-level English course; they're worth 25% of your grade. He has no fidelity to the text; it is not uncommon for an hour to go by without ever engaging the text. In class discussions are limited and do not engage the text in any meaningful way.

His class was extremely boring. He seems to not even be interested in the subject he's talking about. He'll give you suggestions for your papers, but not ones that really count.

He is extremely helpful and nice. He will actually take your paper into his hands, review it and give his suggestions, he'll even help you outline the paper. His quizzes and exams are also relatively easy, drops the lowest quiz. He generally is an easy grader, too.

Professor Evans has been the most articulate professor i've had in college thus far. His interest and passion for Henry James (the sole topic of the seminar i took with him) made class worthwhile. If you're interested in the topic being taught, class should be really liberating. A student looking for support in personal exploration will love him!

Good lecturer. Responds to questions well. Paper topics are a bit complex & can be overwhelming for non-English majors. Must finish readings on time for quizzes. Talk to him if you have trouble with writing your paper. overall, fair grader. attendance (taken randomly) counts. Several canon choices of American lit, as well as some obscure works.

Evans is a gret professor. He's really smart, and very nice, and will help you in any way he can. Read the books and you will do well. That SAT words comment must have come from someone at at 8th grade reading level...he's just smart. Anyone who's an English major will understand him!

ALOT!!!!! of material, classes are really boring, so it is hard to pay attention and take notes, it's like he is speaking in another language using only big SAT words. make sure you read all the readings and know them well for the exam and you should do alright, also anything that he says more than once in class is DEF. on the exams

This class was pretty tough for a freshman English major. I did not take 219 or 220 and took this class second semester. There is a ton of reading...and a lot of it is really dense old-school fiction or poetry. Tests are straight forward...two papers on specific topics. Professor Evans is a great professor though...very clear and understanding.
