He is a great guy and really encourages his students to push themselves in their writing. Hes a tough grader but he gives great feedback when he gives your paper back. Tips: have a strong creative thesis and use a lot of text terms in your papers. Also take down notes of what he likes in a paper. Dont buy the book download the pdf.

He is a very tough grader but if you understand the way he wants you to write, you will be fine. If you want to do well, make sure your thesis and complex and strong and support it with a lot of text from the readings. He's a nice person and always offer his help but you do have to put in the effort.

He is one of the authors of The Humanities Reader and the head of the English department, so naturally he is very knowledgeable about and highly interested in his subject. Do read the preface of the textbook to understand the nature and purpose of the course. Amazing lecturer and person; a very fair grader. Expos is hard but you learn a lot here.

Such a nice professor! Want his students to do well and actually believes in them. Give him the effort and respect he gives you, and you'll see results. Go to him for help, he is always happy to meet with students to go over papers. Idk why he got some bad reviews below because he really is great.

Spellmeyer is wonderful . . .yes, there is a disconnect between all of the fancy rhetoric surrounding the Writing Program (such as the noble-sounding books and articles he has written to further his career and get a nice six-figure tenured salary), and the reality of the Program itself . .But at least he has tried to make the humanities great again

I would like to add to my previous review that I truly did enjoy Expos and Spellmeyer as a teacher: I came out of the course a better critical thinker and more interested in interdisciplinary issues. But I have the nerdy hobby of reading old college readers (they can be purchased very cheaply) and my favorites are the ones from the 60's and 70's

For such an unassuming man, I am amazed at his sheer chutzpah: he has basically slapped a bunch of articles together and called it the "New Humanities," as though thousands of years of the development of the humanities were rendered moot by virtue of the exalted title of "Director." Why does every generation of academics try to reinvent the wheel?

Spellmeyer is the BEST expos professor at Rutgers hands down. Always gives you great feed back on your essays in class and in his office hours. He did not give us a midterm either. GOAT

He's super nice and funny and recommended him to my friends. But, I got a B on every single paper and even went to office hour multiple times a week when a new essay was due. I felt as though my writing improved very much, just not enough to move up on the very detailed Expos Rubric.

Kurt Spellmeyer is a good, honorable soul and truly a top-notch thinker as well as a noble teacher. He is that rare combination of pedagogical and intellectual courage. I do admire him a great deal and regret that as his student I allowed my own paucity of intellectual integrity, not to mention of basic wisdom and courtesy, to hinder my judgment.

I don't know why people don't like him. He's an awesome teacher. He gives us so much time to write essays. He passed everyone on the first essay. He's really helpful. Didn't give us a midterm. gives more time if needed. Gives you well thought out and precise feed back on drafts. Encourages you to come to office hours. better than all my friend's.

This professor favors some over others. I'm white and I hardly try, yet I manage a B+. My friend is Indian, he tries but gets a C. How is this fair? My friend told me that he went to the writting program for help and he was born here. He was never late and handed in every paper.

He is the greatest professor I've ever had. He's a little bit of a hard grader, but he tells you exactly what he wants in a paper. He's very helpful and is passionate about what he teaches. I hope to take another class with him again soon

Take Expos 2 - Environmental Crisis with this prof. He's very helpful, insightful, and a fairly easy grader. He will give you extra "chances" on your papers. Easy A if you can write well.

I think this Professor tries hard to do a good job. I'm sure he has helped many students become a better writer. Sometimes his personality conflicts with his students. I don't think he is such a bad teacher. He does his best to help his students.
