Chess is extraordinarily enthusiastic. He's a spiritual person, so we got to meditate for a couple of minutes at the beginning of each class. He really cares about his students, but fair warning there is a LOT of reading required. The novels he picked were actually pretty good so it wasn't too hard to get through all of them.

He is such a sweet man. The course was little tough since we had to learn many Hebrew words (hence it's Judaism). He's very enthusiastic and when he gets excited, he shouts. So, you won't be able to fall asleep. He is incredibly helpful.

Best teacher I've ever had. He gets so excited when the class is on the right track that he will literally scream out of happiness. Dr. Chess is the kind of guy who will always help you out and you even enjoy talking to him. If you have the opportunity, TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES!

Took him for intro to poetry writing and now taking him for advanced. Chess is pretty awesome. He is really passionate about poetry. He pushes students to go beyond their comfort zones. He is not easy at all, but you just may learn something.

He is one of the best teachers I have ever had, and this is my second degree. I took Holocaust and the Arts, and Poetics of Perception. Yes, the work load is pretty consistent and you will be busy, but I learned a lot. Very helpful, sincere, loves learning, very personable, very helpful with medical issues and extenuating circumstance.

Okay, because of this site, me and the rest of the class dreaded taking this class. But seriously. He's very lively so it's hard to fall asleep. Yes, he will scare the snot out of you when he gets super excited, but it's always about the students with him. He's very willing to be there and help.

i really hate this man. he brags to every new class about meeting Ginsburg, but his story reveals that they hardly talked. he's a fair professor of poetry criticism but i would never let him teach me to write it. his poetry is awful and his theory is false objective. again, i hate the man, but there are a lot of people that seemed to like him.

He is very passionate about poetry. That can easily make you feel passionate too. But he is a very tough grader, you can't BS your papers with him. His classes are interesting and entertaining, but can be hard if you struggle understanding poetry. Overall, a devoted professor.

This class is rediculously hard. If you are interested enough to consider taking this class just read the textbook, "The Israelis". He gives an extreme emphasis on poetry analysis interspersed with exclamations when a student has a valid poetic statement. Workload: You write papers while reading multiple books and working a intense group project..

Rick is one of my favorite teachers. He's challenging in what he expects from students, but is helpful and understanding about creative growing pains. He is VERY enthusiastic about poetry and loves to teach. He can rub some more sensitive people the wrong way with sarcasm, (he's typically blunt) but hey at least he's not pretentious.

He makes class fun. You will never go to one of Chess's classes and fight falling asleep. Take him if you're into class participation, but not if you just want to sit in the back and keep your mouth shut.

Whether or not his self-styled mystic demeanor is an act, his classes are well worth taking. Your participation level in his class (not necessarily the work--though the work is, honestly, very easy) will determine your final grade. A word of advice: Stay out of any debate over Palestine in his class

Very kind and caring guy, Or is that just an act? Enthusiastic about poetry, but slightly pretentious, picks favorites in the class from the beginning, has a good heart and is pleasant, though very willing to crush your dreams of writing
