He's so funny, keeps lectures interesting. Homework is all due at the end of the semester and all you have to do is attempt 70% of it (not even get them right) for a perfect score. The tests are hand-graded so you can get partial credit which is nice, however watch out for grading errors.

Spurgeon is a great teacher, and really knows his stuff. The class is not easy by any means but by this point in your chemistry career, you should love it and have a knack for it. If you do, you'll love Spurgeon's passionate and effective lectures. Study very hard for tests, though.

Dr. Spurgeon is the man. He is the best professor I have ever had. He is very eccentric and loves cracking jokes. Sure he is a mean demeanor, but that adds to his awesome personality. My friends have other ochem professors and they all go to spurgeon's lectures to learn, needless to say they ace the other professors exams just from surgeon.

Dr. Spurgeon gives incredible lectures. He is engaging and clear about everything you need to know. The tests aren't as impossible as everyone makes them seem, though you HAVE to take damn good notes and go to every lecture. He's not very personable, so don't take him if you can't handle it. This is guy you want for O chem at the UA.

A very hard teacher HOWEVER, its manageable. Ochem is complicated and hard in general, but he teaches it well. No PPTs, students MUST take damn good thorough notes. Tests are hard and VERY TRICKY. Getting an A is damn near impossible unless you achieve greatness from test 1. Also does a standard deviation curve which makes the class a competition.

Literally the best teacher I've ever had! If you go to every class, take notes, and practice the previous exams he gives you, you'll do just fine. He tells you everything you need to know and all the "SAM"s students always make. He is nice in person, but don't ask stupid questions...especially in discussion. Make sure you know EVERY reaction well!!

hands down the best teacher i've had at u of a so far. he explains everything extremely well and makes o chem pretty easy to understand. the tests are pretty hard, but i've only done bad on one test because i didn't study as much as i would've liked to. as long as you dedicate enough time to understand the material, you'll do fine.

One of the best teachers I have ever had in college. Everyone complains about how hard this class is but with this prof I learned everything and understood it. He is pretty funny and you wont fall asleep during lecture. I got an A and didn't stress to much over his class.

Great, great teacher. I'm a humanities BA, but I've really learned a lot of organic chemistry from this guy's class. He's funny, volatile, animated, a bit crazy, and smart as hell. You do NOT want to miss lecture. Tests are tough, and if you get an A, or even a B in this class, you've done well. This is the guy you want for o chem at U of A.

Bad thing about him - he is mean and doesn't like stupid questions. But he is great when it comes to teaching you the material and being very clear and concise about it. Seriously, if you pay attention, you will not get confuse as to what he is saying. He makes jokes and he does try to make the class entertaining.

I've never knew what studying was until I took Spurgeon's class. He'll probably be the most memorable professor throughout my education. If you enjoy challenges, register. If you have self-esteem issues, avoid Dr. Spurgeon. Think about your question before asking him anything, or he will belittle you!

Make no mistake, this is like having Dr. House for your teacher. He knows his stuff but doesn't care about your concerns and will not hesitate to rip into you. There is no trick. Just print all of his old exams out (he provides 3 years worth for each test) and do them all over and over. You need to know the reactions COLD. Minimum 2 hours per day

Yes, Spurgeon knows his stuff, but there's more to being a teacher than just conveying the information... He has a forbidding demeanor and was not very respectful towards his students. Also, he does not allow questions during lecture. If you take ochem with him, brace yourself for an hour of him hollering.
