She got off-topic a lot and this class really felt like it was geared more towards journalism majors. When she does talk about film related theory she makes a lot of broad and untrue assumptions about the industry like shes some kind of pro (I work at Warner Bros.) Looking back I fail to see the point of this class other than to read current events

I really wanted to enjoy this class, part of me did. I will say Dr Larson seems informed and is passionate about certain subjects, the problem I had was that her lecturing approach felt so abrasive, so caustic, that there were many times I wanted to reply or comment on relevant topics but was afraid to because she would tear me a new one.

Dr. Larson's lectures don't match the textbook, so when it comes to the online quizzes, Quizlet is your best friend. She is very opinionated and turned many class periods into opportunities for her to "preach" at us. The amount of work required in the lab is ridiculous, her tests are online, and she takes attendance points.

I have taken several classes with Dr. Larson. Looking at the reviews here I can see being a little older than the average student in her lower level classes may have an impact on how I see her. Class is designed to encourage thought rather than just memorize. Lab activities expand on lecture material. Showing up is important like in life generally.

If this class isn't required for your major, don't take it. It is a lot of unnecessary and difficult work for a level 100 class. Hence the "so many papers" tag. It is lecture heavy, but I read the book for any quizzes and tests. Lots of opportunities are given for extra credit. The class is easy to receive a good grade in if you do the work.

As a female poly-sci major, I have to say I found Dr. Larson's lectures insulting as not only does she very poorly understand many political ideologies both domestic and international, but she seems to genuinely believe she is teaching a political science course instead of an intro media analysis class.

Comment:
Dr. Larson often spun our basic, introductory level media class into a group discussion about current events/politics. All quizzes/tests are on Blackboard, but her PowerPoints and the textbook don't align at all, making studying super difficult. The lab portion of the class was easy and fun - one big group project for the semester.

Too political and not in a good way, thinks we are so naive we will accept her opinions as fact. Kind of an annoying person but just go with it and you'll pass.

she is the type of professor that thinks because she has read about an issue she knows more about it versus someone who has experienced actual issue.

Comment:
Dr. Larson was extremely opinionated and used up too much class time for her own rants. The lab portion requires an excessive amount of work for a gen-ed course and almost never touched base with what we talked about in lecture. The material was rarely important enough to take notes. Use Quizlet and you will pass.

Comment:
This class is a gen-ed requirement and being a media professor Dr. Larson assumes, correctly, that most of us do not understand how media works. She also assumes, incorrectly, that we do not understand how the world works. Her lectures become very off-kilter and priggish, giving off this "I bet you all didn't know that!" attitude.

Comment:
Dr. Larson feels more like an activist instead of a professor, the textbook she wrote for her class really supports this, while there is nothing wrong with being an activist the way she tries to get students interested in issues is rather off-putting, its very matter of fact approach instead of something like invoking sympathy from audience

Dr. Larson would constantly get off of topic when discussing in lecture. She was hard to follow and there were many days I didn't take a single note because it didn't help me. There is a quiz every week online but the answer can be found on quizlet. Not too hard of a class but a real pain in the butt to go to lecture.

Comment:
Dr. Larson is extremely biased. Her tests and lectures reflect this, and while you are encouraged to read the book, most of the material is comprised of her own personal views. Still, I have learned a lot about media history.

Larson doesnt teach much at all in lecture. She asks the room a question and waits until someone guesses an answer. She gets off topic a lot and gets behind on material--forcing you to read the book for the quizzes. Theres an online quiz every week. The lab activities are pointless & require a lot of work. Tests are put online over a weekend.

I'ma be honest: this class feels like you're in a city council meeting and she is that one woman that comes to the meeting every week to complain during open mic.

Most of the class was just guest speakers coming in and then writing a really vague paper on what we learned (usually nothing). Besides that, she's really full of herself and it was entertaining to watch her ask a class of 100+ people questions that she would have to answer herself because the class just sat there in silence.
