DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. It's a semester long group project. Doesn't sound too bad? Wrong. He has ridiculous filing procedures, refuses to teach you the material, and grade subjectively. He made my group redo a project 3 times because he didn't like our work. Dropped the class to save my mental health.

I think Professor Fisher is an expert in his field, but I don't think he cares about his students. On average, he probably answered 20 percent of my questions. I passed two of the seven tests and did even worse on labs. The one redeeming part of this class is that I feel I've learned a lot, but I still wish I'd never taken it. Not worth the stress.

Doug Fisher is the worst and rudest professor I have ever encountered. All of his grading is subjective and he does not listen or give feedback. not sure how the USC lets him be a professor at all. poor reflection on the university. seriously do not take this class.

This professor made this class a full time job. He was condescending when I went to him for help and was not helpful. Expected us to know everything before we have even taken the class and his syllabus and instructions were so confusing and would not answer any questions. DO NOT EVER EVER TAKE HIS CLASSES IF YOU VALUE FREE TIME AND SANITY.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! I had to drop in fear of losing my scholarship. I would never take again and wouldn't wish his class on my worst enemy. We started with 20 people in the class and by week 4 there were only 5 people in the class. Seriously avoid. Our class average for tests was about a 55 and for projects it was a 65. Unclear grading criteria.

Doug Fisher is hard, but rewarding if you want a job in journalism. He is great to have on your side. Go to class, go to office hours and study a little bit every day. An A is hard, but not impossible. Make sure you take notes in class and watch/read ALL the readings. I learned so much in this class.

Doug is a very specific grader. He is incredibly nitpicky and while he claims that the signs you make are up to your artistic ability, if they don't follow his vision he completely shoots them down. He is very condescending and not helpful when it comes to his feedback on signs. The entire class is group based which actually works really well.

This is the worst class/professor combo I've ever had. He has very little care for students and constantly makes rude comments when students don't understand subjects. Classes have no value because all he does is lecture and give extremely difficult labs. Save yourself from a terrible class & even worse teacher and take editing from someone else.

Will NOT help you. I went to his office hours and all he did was tell me what I did wrong and not what I could do to improve. WAY too hard for an elective class. He is way to specific about everything and if you get one thing wrong its an automatic fail. Everything has to be just right. Also I haven't passed one of his tests

As a recent grad, this class was the hardest class I've taken in the J school, but also the most useful. I met with Prof Fisher once a week during office hours to help me pass, but he has been extremely helpful - even after the semester finished. I recommend anyone who enjoys journalism/English to take this class, even if it's scary at first.

Take it, work hard and learn something forever. I had him in the early 2000s for four different classes (five if you count copy editing twice). I complained about all the things everyone else here is complaining about, but Ive used what I learned for 15 years. Work hard, suffer and pass. Its worth it.

Doug is very knowledgeable on the subject of Journalism and he can give inspirating journalists great advice. His tests are extremely difficult, but they werent weighted heavily whereas the group project was. He critiques every little thing and he really makes you work for a good grade. This class was difficult, but you do learn a lot.

I have had professor Fisher twice and not by choice. STEER CLEAR OF THIS MAN. I made the mistake of taking his data journalism class my senior year and now I may not graduate on time. If you ask for help he is sarcastic. He also is very strict and specific. The tests are not passable and extremely difficult. I can't stress enough how hard he is.

It is clear he knows what he's talking about and I respect him a lot but he is WAY too strict and nitpicky for an entry level course. I failed every test even after hours of studying (even though they were online..) and was honestly proud of myself for getting out with a C. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. DONT EVEN CONSIDER IT. PLEASE TAKE MY ADVICE.

NEVER take Doug for anything. He is an extremely hard grader and he is not helpful. 4 of my friends took JOUR291 with 2 different professors and all got A's and put in 1/8th the effort I did. He worked for the company that writes AP Style guide and is a stickler for getting it all correct. If you make 1 fact error on the final its an automatic fail

Mr. Fisher knows the material very well. He will expect the same out of you. If you do not prepare outside of class, you will not do well. The writing assignments are very hard to earn a good grade on so be sure to put extra work and time into them. If you do not do the assigned online readings, you will not pass the tests.

If you are a Advertising or VisCom major I would do everything in your power to avoid Mr Fisher. Although he gave good feedback and actually paid attention to your writing, his grading was harsh. He has the attitude of his way or the highway even though he tries to deny it. Too strict of a teacher to be teaching entry level JOUR class. Intimidating

Take this class only if it's for your major. It was a lot of HARD work and the grading was hard to understand. Fisher knows what he's talking about and I learned a lot, but this was the hardest class I've ever taken. I wouldn't take again.

So condescending and makes you feel like you are nothing. Feel so bad about yourself when leaving the class. You are graded on labs BEFORE you learn the material (that you teach yourself). It is impossible to do well in this class. The only thing funny about the class is how awful it is. If you wanna hurt your GPA and self-confidence take it.
