Comment:

Only nice during the first few weeks. The class is extremely heavy on the lectures and on the readings. He expects you to be involved in class, yet all he does is talk. Can be rude about certain things, but is accessible during office hours. Assigns extremely long papers and readings. Horrible experience, not taking a class with him ever again.

Comment:

Professor Betances is an extremely nice person. That said, his lectures are kind of scattered and confusing and the readings he assigns can be difficult. Fortunately, he gives a study guide before the exam so you can still do well. The papers are difficult, but it isn't that hard to get an A.

Though he has a thick spanish accent, he truly is a great guy. He assigns a lot of homework and readings but after the couple weeks he doesn't even read them just grades them if you do them. Tests are tough but if you study you're fine.

Definitely do not recommend - lectures are extremely uninteresting, directions are unclear, grading scale is vague, syllabus is strayed from, lectures do not have anything to do with exams/papers/assignments. Two 10 page research papers?! NOPE.

Extremely confusing professor. He does not give instructions in writing and gives you confusing verbal instruction, if he gives you any at all. On top of that, he will not accept work that doesn't match the instructions he never gave you. It is very hard to succeed in this class, no matter how studious you are.

Avoid this class if you are just looking for a requirement. Two 10+ page papers is ridiculous. And he gives participation grades without putting in effort to learn anyones name. Nice enough guy but not a good professor if you are just trying to fulfill a requirement.

This guy clearly has a screw loose...he talks about how immigrants are a blight to American society yet the guy is from south america, talked more about latin america and his personal thoughts than sociology

LAS 140 was a fairly interesting class. However, Betances does tend to get sidetracked and definitely plays favorites, which explains the mixed bag of reviews. The books and course readings were pretty interesting but you better know your stuff or he will tear you apart. It definitely helps to agree with him. Grades are also kind of biased.

Emelio is an extremely nice guy! He teaches a very difficult class, but keeps it fairly laid back. The lectures can get off track a lot, and there's a lot of reading. Overall, I enjoyed the class though!

I really enjoyed Professor Betances' class. He's not an easy professor, but he's very helpful and honest when it comes to helping people to do well. I for one really liked the work that I had an opportunity to do and the topic areas that our class covered.

Doesn't read the papers you write, assigns a ton of useless reading. If you miss more than one class, he deducts from your grade. On the plus side, he gives out study guides for the 2 exams and shows a lot of movies in class.

Betances is awesome. Great guy and not a bad teacher. There were some great discussions in that class, though he is prone to go off on random tangents. Very helpful and loves the subject he teaches. Always great to have a conversation with. Usually a fair grader.

This class is generally pretty easy considering it is an intro level class but he makes it more complicated than it needs to be. Class is pretty boring all he does it repeat what the book says. Also, he is extremely biased in favor of the females in the class. He worships what they say and barely lets the guys talk.

Great man, one of my favorite professors I've ever had. Class can side-tracked, but he is such a knowlegable man. Great to go to outside of class, loves to talk and is so helpful and compassionate. Easy grader if you put forth some effort; wants you to succeed.
