Holy firecracker, get ready to write!. I wrote 50+ pages for this class! And that's not all. His quizzes are over the textbook and are pretty dang specific. Now, Prof Hanley's an alright guy, and he'll remove a question from the quiz if someone talks to him about it, but the textbook readings are long. So are his lectures if Soc isn't your thing.

Comment:
The class itself is easy, but he makes what could be an interesting topic very boring. Participation is required but the lectures are long and boring. Quizzes are fine as long as you read the book. There are a few tests, which are essays, and they are not difficult if you put in the work.

Dr. Hanley is not a hard professor--it is incredibly easy to score an A if you pay attention and read. He uses a mixed-methods approach to teaching through both lecture and discussion in tandem. The material you will read is rich and you should be reading it if you care about your field. He has a wealth of experience, ask him about Estonia!

Comment:
For the online SOC104, it's graded off of quizzes, a midterm, and a final. It's all reading and quiz / test taking. There's no interaction at all. It isn't an overwhelming amount of reading, but it's a good bit and don't skim and don't skip his "introductions" on each lesson. Asks for very specific details on the quizzes.

I just took this online course just for the useless KU Core. And man this guy did not even know how to prepare online courses. The course was just purely reading tasks. No video, no slides, no voiceovers, nothing. Just read.

Comment:
The grade for this online class is based 70% on a midterm and final, and 30% on six essays. The prof doesn't really offer instruction, but if you read the book and take the quizzes, you should get an A.

He kept class interesting. Just fill out the study guides for tests and quizzes and it's a breeze. He grades pretty easy on papers, as well.

Taking notes in Budig 120 can be rather difficult especially when tired but it's not that bad. You can easily get by without reading the book on quizzes, but make sure you fill out the study guides before the tests and you should get a good grade pretty easily.

I feel an A is attainable, but you do have to work for it. (Obviously, I didnt...) A lot of reading, about 60 pages a week. His lectures are clear though, and most things on the test come from those. The tests were a little tricky too, especially if you don't do the study guide. (unfortunately, those are generally really long and time consuming)

The lecture is boring but will help you out for the test study guides later. He assigns a lot of reading, and as long as you read most of it, you should get an A on the quizzes every discussion. Exams are easy as long as you fill out the study guide.

One of the most BORING profs you'll ever take. How can anyone make sociology seem so uninteresting? This guy should be fired for boring his students to death. I went to his office hours and found him to be a real jerk as well. Doesn't like students or teaching. How did this guy get a job at KU?

Definately a snoozefest. David Smith has him KILLED on teaching sociology. I really wish I had gone to class my first year with the latter, as he was an excellent professor...it was my fault for deciding an extra hour or so of sleep was more important.

boring, his whole lecture comes from his power point dated from the previous year. Stale lecture and a class that was a waste of time. I learned more from the TA than from what babble the prof. spewed forth
