One of the HARDEST classes I've ever taken, but I LOVED it! I will never look at a rock or mountain in the same way again! His lectures are fascinating. He's extremely gifted at telling a story! GO TO CLASS! I only missed ONE lecture and it hurt my next quiz severely. He offers SO much extra credit--TAKE ADVANTAGE of it all and you will pass!

Hayes is a nice person but it does require a lot of memorization of every little things he says. Class is composed of quizzes, midterm, & final which are all very difficult even with studying for. Unless you have unlimited time to study for them.

Comment:
Professor Hayes is kind, yet also prone to tangents and cramming substantial amounts of insipid information into brief periods of time without allowing time to digest it all. If you can take another class to fulfill this requirement, take it. Honestly, take it. This class has a lot of dry reading & quizzes that feel dissimilar to lectures/texts.

He is clearly passionate about the subject, but it does not seem to inspire him to make the information understandable. His tests would ask few questions about topics we covered heavily in class, but focus on things that he glossed over in lecture. He does provide extra credit, but the answers were rarely found in the books or notes.

Geology 165 was way harder than i expected. He gives a lot of extra credit and his lectures are very good but fast paced. It was annoying that he didn't use canvas. He gave extra credit each chapter and his weekly quizzes were hard but not impossible. You have to work to get an A

Professor Hayes does a great job at making a boring subject interesting. He understands most students do not plan on majoring in Geology. Every quiz he has an opportunity of five extra credit points. As long as you get 10 questions right out of 20 and do the extra credit you should pass the class. The labs are very important as well. Take him!

Uses free response quizzes instead of multiple choice tests except for the midterm and final. Its not the toughest class to pass but if you dont study theres no way you will pass. Also he doesnt use canvas at all so to check your grade you have to go directly through him, which is annoying.

Professor Hayes is by far one of the greatest teachers at MJC. The thing with his class is that you need to be prepared to be a college student. Meaning that YOU need to put the work in. This is no longer high school. It's your job to study! His tests can be challenging but if you study, do the extra credit and never skip class you will pass.

His tests are tough! He him self is easy going and has good lectures, but do the extra credit! Your gonna need it. But its not that he purposely makes it hard its just the nature of the subject, there is so much you need to remember and every little thing you can think of about the earth has a name! Labs are tedious and boring! Lab exams are hard!

Professor Hayes is a funny teacher. His class is not easy at all. Lots of studying is required especially if you are not accustomed to Geology (like me). DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! It is worth every point! His tests are tough and the quizzes come from lecture so take notes and STUDY!

Professor Hayes is an amazing instructor. Although geology can be a dry subject, he gives it his all. He is very passionate about the subject. He loves questions and is willing to help you. He offers extra credit almost every week. The quizzes and tests are based off his lectures, book material, and extra credit sheets. This is not an easy course.

One of the best teachers at MJC. If you have any interest at all in California's natural history TAKE THIS CLASS! The tests are not easy, but they are all off of lecture material. If you can go on the field trips! You will not regret it!

Professor Hayes is easily the best professor at MJC. He is incredibly involved in the Science department and with his students. I ended up taking all of his classes because of his passion for geology. I recommend this class to anyone needing a science class, though you better be ready to learn!

I thoroughly enjoyed taking Hayes as a professor. Taking historical geology was very interesting, and Hayes was a good professor. As long as you do all the homework, extra credit (which he offers a lot) and attend every class anyone could do fine. He understands that the class is difficult and if you try your best he will see that and give credit.

Very tough subject if you're only taking this for a science credit. That being said, the teacher's lectures are clear and organized, so if you take notes, you should be alright. If you pay attention, it is not a difficult class. Most people that didn't do well were the ones that skipped class all the time. Teacher is friendly and easygoing.

Comment:
Very difficult course and a lot of testing. I spent so much time studying for this class. Exams weekly and the midterm and final are hell. He's an arrogant careless professor and only helps students who know 100% about Geology. If you can't help struggling students, don't be a teacher.
