Comment:
Dynamics is tough to begin with, there's no need to have a prof. make it even harder! Shiflett has such little self-awareness. The midterm avg was >27%, and the avg final was >45%. I taught myself everything. He oughta be fired! Avg final grade was 53%. A good prof shouldn't need such a ridiculous curve! It's not the student's fault at that point!!

Really nice guy that can teach well and very helpful in office hours. However the class is structured very poorly. Online quizzes are worth 50% of your grade and they are really hit or miss. Exams are tough and are nothing like the homework. Homework is long and difficult and not worth much.

Worst academic experience of my life. Spends hours going over theoretical concepts in lecture with notation used only in his class and the chosen textbook, assigns quizzes unrelated to the lecture, and gives homework assignments that are unrelated to both. The class is ill-structured, and after 15 weeks everything I learned was self-taught.

I have nothing against Shiflett as a person, but AME 301 was the most painful class I've taken at USC so far. Weekly quizzes on Blackboard are exceedingly difficult and worth 50% (!) of the grade; super long problem sets are only worth 10%. Students are incentivized not to attend lecture because all we do is go through lengthy derivations.

Unfortunately, there is no easy way out of this class. There are no loopholes, there are no methods, you have to grin and bear it, read the book, look up problems on Chegg, and survive. Bank on your classmates on not doing as well as you are and pray for the curve. I'm sorry.

Worst academic experience in my life taking AME 301 with him. Lectures are useless, often makes the subjects more confusing. Weekly quizzes are extremely hard.

Lectures have nothing to do with the homework, quizzes, or tests. He's a nice guy but attending lecture is absolutely worthless and does nothing to prepare you for the actual work.

Class was solely dependent on quizzes which did not correlate to lecture which did not correlate to homework. He's a nice guy, but a bad professor.

Prof. Shiflett spends most of lecture going over painstaking mathematical derivations. He focuses very little on building up the basic conceptual knowledge necessary for understanding. Each week, we had 1) a homework assignment, 2) a quiz on the homework, and 3) a regular quiz. I had no time in between assessments to simply review the material.

Comment:
Honestly Shiflett is a nice-ish guy but a terrible professor. His lectures are useless- he spends the entire time proving theorems and literally does zero examples. Homework is vaguely related to lecture but extremely hard to figure out without the TA. He's usually the only one teaching 301, so your only hope is to go to the TA's office hours!

Literally the worst professor I've ever had. Lectures are basically useless because they're very basic and don't cover everything that will be tested on the homework. Homework which easily takes 10 hours per week to do on your own. Avoid if at all possible, but he's usually the only one who teaches the course.

Dr. Shiflett is the nicest human being in USC! He is very dedicated and humble to answer your questions. The problem is he takes it so much easy on students, therefore, they don't perform well at his quiz or exams. However if you are dedicataed and self-motivated person, you can perform well. I ve got an A in his class, studying just 3 hours/week

Overall a Good Professor for the Introductory Course. He tries his best to get you interested in Mechanical Engineering. He can be boring at times and you might fall asleep, but he doesn't mind too much if you do (he says to just lay your head down for 10-15 minutes if you are sleepy.) Topics/HW might be difficult but if you ask him, he is helpful.

For an introductory class, he's not bad. Sometimes he gives unclear instructions, but if you ask him, he'll clarify. He's a nice guy. He has high (but reachable) expectations out of his students. He's fair.
