Comment:
Not quite sure what to say about Professor Press. Definitely not one of the better professors I had at Hunter. Extraordinary well versed in Plato, but his teaching style is just... well you can find out for yourself. Or better yet, dont. Ill leave it at that since anything more seems to get the rating taken down.

I imagine a lot of students that are seeking a minor or are looking to breeze through a class without paying attention would find Professor Press difficult. If those people were actually serious about learning, they would learn a great deal by studying with him. Rating people feels so silly, but he's such a good teacher and a great person.

It's a hard class, but you'll learn a lot about Plato and Aristotle. To do well: (a) do all the reading, (b) ask questions in class/in office hours, and (c) outline answers to take home essays. If you're a serious student willing to do the work, it's a very rewarding class. But it's not a class that you can simply attend w/o doing the reading.

This dude is a genius. It is because of this that he knows so much, that he is a tough professor to please. Because he knows so much his classes are pretty hard. Unless you are really a philosophy nerd expect to work hard in his class.

Professor Press has high expectations for his students - as he should. Do the reading, and turn in assignments on time and you should receive the grade you deserve. He allows re-writes, and his feedback is extremely thorough and helpful. There is no reason why you shouldn't get a good grade in this class.

An expert in ancient Greek philosophy but his lectures lack structure and are not organized. Also he expects your paper to include things that have not been thoroughly covered in class. He is funny, friendly and intelligent BUT most probably your GPA will be destroyed! Don't expect an A! It's almost impossible!

His lectures have charm but lack substance. He flaunts his philosophical understanding of the material but never really establishes a concrete idea that as a student I could grapple with. I've taken 6 philosophy courses so far and found this one to be the least inspiring. I recommend avoiding this professor.

A good professor. He knows what he's talking about, so be sure to pay attention and take thorough notes. If you're a philosophy major this class shouldn't be that difficult as long as you keep up with the readingsask questions. He's really good at giving feedback and quick to provide clearer interpretations if you ask. Made me a better thinker!

He will make you a better writer and thinker. I don't think he's arrogant, it's more that he knows the subject really well and will break down every possible argument. Answers all e-mails and does so quickly, and his answers are always helpful. He will work with you on essays, and allows re-writes. Not an easy class, but he's a great professor.

I absolutely LOVE Prof. Press! Had him for 212 and 380. His classes aren't easy, you need to do the readings and the work, but he's extremely helpful, gives feedback, and allows re-writes of papers for better grades. I am a stronger writer because of him, and it reflects in my work for other phil classes. He's funny too! Take him, you wont regret!

Maybe it is due to my lack of intellectual curiosity that I found the class to be only mildly interesting. I have heard that all Western philosophy is just a footnote to Plato, but I have trouble seeing much immediate relevance to our time. That being said, Press is great at clarifying texts and he taught the class well.

He is posing as a nice person, but do not let yourself be fooled by his apparent kindness and willingness to "help" you. If he is not going to like you from the very beginning, he will give you a very low grade all the way through the course, no matter what you do to prove yourself. He crippled my passion for philosophy.

He is very hard to please, putting more emphasis on the writing part, than on class participation. Gives lots of Cs and -Bs. If you are looking to screw up your GPA, enroll in his class!

One of the few professors I've had that I would actually call intelligent. Not the easiest or most lively class, but you'll learn a lot.
