Loved his class. A lot of people think its boring of difficult, but take notes! The quotes used on the tests are almost ALL mentioned and explained in class. Even if you don't read and just take lecture notes you will do well in the class!

Any hope of enjoying Shakespeare was killed thanks to this class. Forces students to read things dramatically, barely discusses the meaning of it, teaches vaguely related Italian sonnets, gives ridiculous quizzes, makes you adhere to very childish writing guidelines. On top of that, sometimes it sounded as if he was falling asleep in class too!

Offered no actual direction in terms of preferences towards writing. Also, seemed to favor male students. It's impossible to know how to improve your grade with Prof Hirsch because he offers no feedback. Seems very behind on the critical landscape and discourages all but the most traditional viewpoints. Also, allows students to dominate conversatio

Not good. Very safe, traditional ideas about reading and writing. Lectures are mostly uninteresting. When asked to help me with my paper, he made me summarize it for him, and would not look at my paper at all himself. He said, "it's too much." The one positive: he did emphasize simplicity in writing and strict grammar, which has helped my writing.

Professor Hirsch is very friendly and makes me smile. I'm not sure how useful I found his lectures, they seemed to be hit or miss. Sometimes his interpretations of the text really helped my understanding, and at other times I couldn't help but focus on a crossword puzzle to keep from falling asleep.

WORST professor I have ever had at the university. His lectures put everyone to sleep and had nothing to do with the material we had read for class. We never had discussions in class, he just talked the ENTIRE time. When asking for student's opinions on the text, he would tell them that they are wrong and would give him own opinion. DO NOT TAKE HIM

Gordon teaches with energy, knowledge, humor and flexibility. I learned a great deal from his class and appreciate his sensitivity to the uniqueness of each student. When I took his course I was a non-traditional student just returning to school. He supported me in my efforts to succeed. Thank you!

Prof.Hirsch loves to teach. He is very good at leading a discussion & does not discount any arguments which you can back up with evid.from the text. He was a mentor to me although he did not have to be & I recommend him warmly & highly.

One of the best professors I had at UMN. Truly concerned about his students. Especially enjoyed his Austen course, and his British lit survey. Thanks for being such a good teacher! ZR
