Garvey is the best chem professor I've had so far. He's very passionate, energetic, and helpful. Go to lecture and the class will be very easy (I was in 108). PS He is a teddy bear :)

He's a nice man and wants you to do well. Sometimes his lectures are painfully boring and a lot of kids stop showing up after a month or so.

He's just a sweet, funny guy. He loves what he does and loves teaching it. However make sure you learn how to solve the math problems because he skims over them in a PowerPoint and you need them for the exams. The homework teaches you the math problems and he'll teach you the theory in lecture. If you put in the time and effort you will do well.

Garvey is a pretty cool guy, but not an amazing professor since his lectures don't match up with his exams/homework. He mostly focuses on concepts in lecture, but his exams focus almost entirely on application of formulas and mathematics seen mainly in the homework. With that being said, lecture is still critical, so don't skip it.

Comment:
Most of this class is math and he doesn't take time to work through problems like they do. He just lectures for the whole time which makes knowing what to study for difficult. He also puts a lot of information on his slides and ties concepts in with the real world, which is nice but it's not going to help you pass the test. Don't take 102 with him.

I am a biochem student who enjoys chemistry. Got an A in his class only because I read the textbook front to back. No hands on problem solving, just lectures- not the way to teach a math based class. Lectures are abt 200 slides/ chapter making it difficult to print notes and study. If I could go back I would 110% take it with ventura

Interesting lectures if you can pay attention, but don't bother writing everything he covers down. Powerpoints are oversaturated but he lectures well enough, and trims down the slides right before a quiz(test). 2 quizes, final, online hw's. Homeworks are full of math. Quizes/test are all conceptual, and multiple choice - review his slides.

Hands down best chem prof for freshman engineers. Worlds better than Keister. Lectures are interesting, hes specific and easy to listen to not to mention hilarious. Gives real world examples to show students where they can work. TAs are mostly good and labs arent too hard. Tests are hard but pay attention in class and you'll do well.

Prof Garvey is a great guy who is there for you when you need the help. Wouldn't say he is one of my favorites. Lectures are a bit confusing at times but depends on how you like to learn. Has problems already done and just lectures. i prefer professors who do problems step by step. Leaves me confused and having to read text to figure out problems

Garvey is way better than Keister. The class is the same format as 107 (labs, recitation, mastering chemistry). His lectures are long and you need to give yourself at least a week to study for the exams since his powerpoints are 200 slides long. I struggled in CHE 107 but have an A in this class. Much better than Keister!!!

Garvey is a good chemistry professor. MasteringChemistry used for HW and similar quiz and lab set up from 107. Tests are more difficult than Keister's because they deviate from the practice test much more than Keister's did. Getting an A is definitely possible, you just have to do solid on the tests.

Professor Garvey is a very knowledgeable man with many years of experience in the field of chemistry, in both research and teaching. He is enthusiastic about what he teaches and easy to listen to. His pace is way too fast though. In a smaller size lecture, I think he would do great. Be sure to ask questions or else you won't have a clue!

Simply goes by powerpoints, doesnt take time to do problems on board. Also talks kind of fast on lectures. Knows everything he is talking about, but includes too many other random words. I took 102 in the fall and ive taught myself MOSTLY everything. smart man, not the best lecturer

Garvey is a good guy, his this class is mandatory depending on your major, you have mastering chem and labs like in 107. Tests are pretty easy, if you study the practice tests he puts online then you should be fine.

I don't understand how all these people like him. His tests are so cruel! He goes over different stuff in class as a review. They are not related to the exam! Too bad he is the only professor for the course!!!

Great lecturer, although uses a lot of slides so best to print them out before class rather than to scramble to copy things down in a notebook. Spends 1-2 lectures going over practice exam before real exam which is very helpful. Difficult but fair exams.

Easily my favorite professor at UB. Very helpful and enthusiastic about the class. Goes in depth to clarify topics when you ask him to, and really cares about your success in the class. Exams are only difficult if you are unprepared, but if you go to lecture and read the textbook you will get an A and really enjoy the class.
