Comment:
Take this class with caution. It is based on two exams and one fifteen-page historiographic term paper. Dr. Needel is witty and highly intelligent. He gives great lectures. However, there is little visual aid outside of the occasional word he writes on the board, making it difficult to keep lecture information clear. Also, no canvas.

Very intelligent, witty, and sarcastic. Spoke for hours without stopping. His instructions were not very clear in regards to the mid terms. Does not use canvas. Only has 3 grades the whole semester. YOU NEED TO MAKE FRIENDS to study together and survive

He's not an easy A professor at all. He gives super interesting lecture on Brazil's history and is lowkey funny sometimes. Huge on format and grammar with papers also dont skim the books you read for them he will call you out on your paper is you bullsh*t anything. Nice guy and super interesting and knows a lot on Brazil no one else seems to know

Very clearly knows his stuff. Great speaker. If you ask a question (which I highly recommend), he'll answer it in great detail. Very accessible during office hours. Attendance is not mandatory, but you're shooting yourself in the foot if you don't go. He teaches you everything you need to know, just write it down and you'll be golden.

I love this professor. Everyone should take Dr. Needell. He doesn't use the book and is very lecture heavy. If you dont show up to class you will fail for sure. He has a midterm, final, and large paper as well as a map quiz. You can do this if you put in the effort and its worth it

My advice for success in the course is to pair readings with the lectures and invest time into your essay. Stay on top of your notes and ask questions. If I were to take the course again, I would have put more work into my essay to push my grade a bit higher. Overall, Needell is funny, willing to help, and knowledgeable - utilize his office hours!

3 things you need to know: note taking is essential during lectures, you're going to work hard for your grade, and go to office hours!!! This class is based on 3 grades - midterm, term paper, and final. Each one will require a significant amount of hours for preparation. Dr. Needell doesn't grade easily, but it is possible to do well!

Dr. Needell is hands down my favorite professor at UF. Makes class interesting and entertaining. Takes time to teach formal writing. Incredibly smart- lectures for hours from memory. This class is fantastic for auditory learners. Used the book once to study for the final exam

Entertaining & fascinating. Lectures from memory every class. Genuinely cares about students. 1 long paper, map quiz, essay-based midterm and final. Lectures/assignments organized, all deets provided up front. Grades writing (grammar, etc) harshly but overall fairly. More approachable in office hours than he seems in class. MUST take/get good notes

I took this class not knowing much about the professor. Here is my assessment: This class was difficult. He makes it known that many people will not perform well. HOWEVER, he is an extremely knowledgeable professor and he wants his students to do well. Your success in his classes is entirely up to how much work you put in. Not easy, but worth it.

He comes off as unapproachable but he's actually a nice guy. he gives you an outline for his lectures but has a tendency to go off on tangents which makes it hard to follow him sometimes. 1 map quiz that you must pass in order to take the midterm 2 tests, 1 15-20 pg paper. TA's grade everything. he'll make you work for an A but i'd take him again.

Professor Needell isn't the most respectful professor you'll take in the history department. He's rude, self-absorbed, and is quick to judge you without knowing the circumstances invovled. Lectures were horrible, not because of the content, he's just hard to understand. Do not take his courses.

Professor Needell is one of my favorite history professors at UF. His classes are by no means easy (the first time I took him I got a C+ and the second an A- once I learned his style). However, if you are a hard working student and want then I absolutely recommend him! Ridiculously smart and very helpful. His class was a great experience

Nearly every comment about this professor is spot on. He is very educated in his field and can lecture for hours from memory. His exams are difficult. His paper is difficult. Thus, his class is difficult. You must work hard for an A.

Comes off super hard and almost scary serious but once you get into the class you see that he is so helpful! I went to see him after class and we talked for an hour. He's really nice and cares about his students. His lectures can be dry, but funny.

He is the definition of what a college professor should be. One of the smartests persons you will ever have the pleasure to meet. His courses are not easy, but for that you could go to a local college. His lectures are the most important part, take detailed notes and be organized and the exams should be relatively easy. Very helpful; take advantage

Needell is one of the smartest professors I have ever had. His class is not easy by any means, but if you pay attention and take good notes, you can pull out an A. He comes off as very serious, but is actually quite laid back and will take time to compare politics to The Godfather movies and dispute claims the he looks like the Dos Equis guy

Taking him for Summer A. AMAZING Professor. I don't mesh well with his teaching style but I'd still recommend him. Very knowledgeable, extremely helpful and extremely caring. Detailed MC tests designed to "penalize foolish ones" and a historiography paper. Again awesome professor. LatAm was probably not for me.

Found the subject to be boring. Lectures are very dry. Huge historiography paper due at the end. Professor Needell is extremely helpful and understanding though, I would reccomend him for this alone.
