Constantly late on grading assignments, very picky grader, and frequently makes mistakes on sending out information correctly and doesn't state instructions clearly.

Professor Abel ran a fantastic online class. Weekly modules consist of chapter reading accompanied with questions/study guide so the reading was a piece of cake, you always knew what could be on the quiz. He responds very quickly to emails and is very considerate. I knew nothing of the subject before but now have a basic understanding of art.

If you miss one or two questions on the quizzes then itll be hard to keep an A. The discussions are only every other week but somehow he takes two weeks to grade them. Hes a pretty tough grader for a basic art appreciation class. Always adds more time for discussion replies because hes still working on grading the discussion from before.

The work that he assigns wouldnt be hard if he were to use regular vocabulary in his lectures. He uses words/phrases that makes normal things hard to understand. The class is pretty straight forward as far as structure. He is a pretty solid teacher but if you're not a big art junky and not familiar with art you are going to have to put in effort.

John Abel is a GREAT professor. Very kind and understanding. Assignments are clear cut and there's no final for the online class. Every week you read a chapter and take a multiple choice quiz, but sometimes he'll throw in short answer questions. Do all the work and you'll definitely get an A.

John Abel is excellent! He actually gives you many assignments and makes you work for your grade, but he is fair and very interactive with his students. You can tell he is passionate about his subjects which is admirable. I recommend him if you're taking ART 100.

Professor Abel is a sweetheart! He's charismatic, funny, and a good genuine teacher who wants nothing but the best for his students. Very helpful, insightful, and friendly with any trouble you have in the course. Would always lighten up my evening when attending his lectures. I would consider taking his class again

I took his summer class. It was somewhat difficult. The lecture was long so I tend to feel a bit drowsy. Its constant note-taking cause he gives a packet with questions he answers throughout the lecture. He has a bit of a hearing issue. we watch videos for quizes on BlkBoard. Memorizing the artwork, I believe, is the most difficult part.

Prof Abel is very clear with what he wants. Provides all q's in a handout, study for midterms and know ALL your art pieces. You deff have to work for a good grade, but you learn a lot and it's actually interesting. Long dark lectures. Wasn't into art but glad I took his class, I feel I learned a lot. Pay Attention take good notes you'll need them.

Awesome professor, he tells you exactly what he expects of you and what will be on the tests, quiet a bit of memorization for the art terms, but everything else was cake! Just show him that you are trying and he will give you the grade you deserve.

Abel is the absolute best. I've taken 141 and 143 with him and signing up for another class simply because I love to hear this guy talk. He really knows his stuff, notable artist himself, not just a talking head. Content is too dry for most non-art majors. tests are too easy, but a nice guy, insightful, down to earth.

Taught once a week for 3 hours of lecture. This class had to have been the most boring class I have ever taken and tests were a bit hard even when I took notes since I often found myself dozing off. I feel asleep once and got yelled at for it. He does expect his students to go to the Getty Center in L.A. which is boring. Stay away if you can.

Really boring, practically deaf. He never gave me a syllabus even after asking him and emailing him for weeks. He assigns two books which he never uses. Not very prepared. He does know his stuff though. The only interesting things were his stories. Also he turns off all the lights and expects you to take tons of notes. Hard to do in the dark.

Hilarious and really, really knows what he is talking about. Those who aren't too keen on history or art will be bored and struggle, but I really enjoyed the class. Oh, and if you like sleeping in class... you'll get yelled at, but really, this is college. You should know better. I learned a lot, and Abel is a really nice guy in general.

If you take good notes, attend class, review notes/images, write a decent paper, don't text or sleep during class and ask for clarity if you don't "get" something you will get a good grade. In this class. This is one of the easiest classes I've ever taken at Cuyamaca, and there is even tutoring available. Buy an old used book online.

I don't know what he is like during a normal semester, but I found the class to be difficult for the 6-week summer course. There was a lot of lecture given at once, but if you take a laptop in it's a lot easier to get it all down. (Just don't surf online at the same time) Beware, he also required a trip up to the Getty in Malibu and one to Balboa.

Wacko. When studying Rembrandt's Prodigal Son, someone asked about the two figures in the background and he said, "they must be two other brothers." Two other brothers who don't exist? Credibility, indeed. It was also annoying, spending $150 dollars on a textbook which was never even opened.

DO NOT TAKE IT AT GROSSMONT! The teacher is horrible. But Abel, at Cuyamaca, is better. The material is somewhat hard, but he does his best to help you with 50pts extra credit. He also uses movies to keep you entertained from the lecture. He gives you a study guide with all the answers before the tests. It's not that bad, just challenging material.
