Comment:
John Belton is very passionate about the films he portrays to us. However, as he stated during the first class, the curriculum is mainly vocabulary. If this is the case I feel as if if studying a textbook would've gotten me farther than this class, because he seemed to ramble for 8/10 of the class, maybe leaving a few minutes for vocab.

For an intro course it was incredibly difficult. but if you make an effort and talk to him it helps, at least for me.

This class was so boring. not because of the material covered but because of the prof. Prof Belton is a very smart man but his teaching style is not good. Nothing was clearly explained and the tests were not easy. He is also a very harsh grader and critiques your paper with a lot of detail.

Prof Belton knows a lot of information about films. BUT he can't teach. Bring coffee to his class, you won't be able to stay awake.

Prof Belton seems like nice man who knows a lot of information. but, as a professor he isn't the best. his lectures seem more like rants that go off topic and the material that is on the exams is not always clearly stated in class.

Comment:
Strictly as a person, Professor Belton is kind and caring but as a professor, he talks way too long. His lectures are dragged on and he barely uses his PowerPoint. The papers you are assigned do not have clear criteria but after he gives it back, he wanted it to be a certain way. Try to get a different professor if that's even possible

Do yourself a favor and DO NOT take him. He is one of the worst professors I ever had. He explains NOTHING clearly and goes over nothing that is on the exams or papers.

Comment:
This is the most boring class I have ever taken which is a shame because it was a topic I was interested in. Belton talks for the entire class time and rambles about absolutely nothing important and it's extremely difficult to pay attention as he doesn't even have coherent power point slides to take notes from. He gives no guidance, do not take.

John Belton is a respectable guy who really knows what he's talking about when it comes to film. Be sure to come to class because he's very subjective about certain elements of the study of film, and interact with him a little. Extremely hard grader, but read the texts and be engaged in his sometimes slow lectures and you pull decent marks

John Belton is one of a kind. He cares a lot for his students. He makes class really fun for everyone by reenacting scenes from movies such as Rear Window or Citizen Kane. He will pick students from the class and we will perform parts of the script to understand the structures of it. Everyone wants to be like him

Comment:
Belton is pretty tough, as he admits, but the class is enjoyable. I've had him for Intro and Cinema Today (which is way easier than intro), and he's always entertaining. People say he is boring probably because they're not interested in film. He has good insight and is very knowledgeable about the film world. I respect him highly. Study a lot!

Comment:
Close readings of cinema is a bit better than his intro course. The class is smaller so he seems to be more tuned in to whether people are following him, but generally his lectures are very meandering and boring. He knows his stuff but he doesn't teach it well. Some films are better than others. Your grade is 3 papers - all easy A's.

He goes on and on and on about exceedingly simple and obvious concepts that he thinks are difficult for people to comprehend. Often loses his train of thought and isn't a very good public speaker. Worships Hitchcock without realizing that his films are very, very basic and simply shotedited and there isn't much to dissect. Easy class but BORING

Lectures are unmotivated. He clearly knows his stuff but lacks the energy to connote it to his students. Loves Hitchcock but I failed to be engaged by the films chosen. Late film screenings. Would not take the class. Two papers are medium difficulty when it comes to grading. Final questions left me completely boggled even though I went to class!

One of the best teachers I have ever had. He generates interest in the films he screens, his lectures are interesting, he encourages interaction with his students, and he is very approachable. If you love film, you'll love any class he teaches.

Don't take this class. Terrible teacher. Does nothing to engage the class. Boring movies, hard tests. No one even pays attention. at any point, you could look around and see at least 15 people on their computers doing something else. Waste of time and unnecessary work. not an easy A

For an introductory film source, I would advise you to stay away. He is not a fair grader. He gives no specific details on what he expects for his assignments, and grades like he did. His lectures are relatively boring. The film selection is intriguing. Not an easy A, and even if you work hard, you will get screwed out of points somewhere.

Very smart. Very knowledgeable about film. Somewhat of a rambler and uses unnecessary and complex language to explain his points. Assignments are a little unclear and wordy but he gives thorough feedback with papers. Attendance sheet is passed around each class. Overall, I enjoyed the class and liked him.
