I think what everyone says is fairly accurate. I'm currently in his class. You need to pay attention in class. He will ask you questions, but it's okay to be unsure. At first, I was put off by him and thought he was a tad rude. However, as the semester has progressed I enjoy him a lot more. He makes the class entertaining in an unconventional way.

His lectures are extremely confusing, once he learns your name, he'll pick on you for every question. No tests, I think we had 3-4 papers throughout the semester. The class could have been taught much better, it seemed as though he didn't care about what he was teaching or about who he was talking to. I dreaded coming to class.

Dr. Shea is a very intelligent professor, however his teaching methods are not those of a 101 class. Do NOT expect any debating in his philosophy class. Unlike most philosophy professionals, Dr. Shea makes no point in teaching in a non bias manner, his political, religious, and societal views are apparent through lecture.

Great professor but is kind of confusing at times. Need to read the book before coming to class to understand what he is talking about. He assigns 3 6 page papers throughout the semester and does not give tests.

Jon Shea is an awful professor. I was immensely looking forward to this class and was left being incredibly sad when I found out how Monotone and off-putting this man is. The "tests" are 7 page papers about utilitarianism. Also, he looks as if he hasn't bathed in years. Please, save yourself and don't take his class.

I had him for philosophy 101, the only homework he gives out is readings and you only have papers to write every couple weeks over elaborating on the material you read. Although they are long papers assigned it wasn't too bad. He tends to pick on particular students, kind of entertaining, its not when its you though. lol

Loved this professor! Quirky sense of humor, and he is not your run of the mill college professor. Explains ideas to make them clear, need it to be more clear? He can do that. My interest in this field increased after leaving. Be prepared to write 3 papers, no tests and only reading assignments. Read before you show up, makes class more enjoyable.

This guy is funny as hell with his dark sense of humor. No doubt that he's strange though. Looks like he just got out of living in a forest for 25 years. Will only call on 3 people all semester, ask weird questions, and sometimes give you a creepy stare before he calls on you. He's strange but keeps class interesting.

yes it is true, he tends to call on 3 people in the class ALL THE TIME! It's not fun if you are the person, which I was! He is a good teacher though, a little boring but I also had him for a long period class. I enjoy that there are only 3 essays even though they are pretty tough! Good luck, pretty good teacher though! Explains things well!

First off this guy looks like he should be downtown begging for money on the streets. He looks like a total bum. He only picks on a few people in the class and he really knows how to make everyone feel awkward. This guy is real creepy and he will bore you to death. I didn't learn anything in this class, total waste of my money

i appreciated his lectures, made the book understandable. i'm not a philosophy major, no interest in the topic, but i needed the class. he gave no tests, the 3 grades were from essays. if you write a paper and give it to him after class, before the due date, he will read it and tell you what you are missing - couldn't ask for more. worked for my A!

Classes were 100% lecture. He calls on you, but asks you strange questions that don?t relate to philosophy, like ?What?s your favorite car?? and then goes way off topic in order to make a point. He might seem lame at first, but within 3 weeks you?ll appreciate his sense of humor.Grading: it's like he takes off a point for every comment he writes

I must agree with other user, if you are worthy to be chosen, prepare yourself! This man is smart enough to keep the topics of 17th century philosophers up to date and coherent. Take Shea if you want to learn not for an quick philosophy credit. PS, SHEA=GOD

His offbeat, and sometimes dark sense of humor kept the class focused. Your entire grade depends on three out of class essays, which can be rewritten for full credit. The only problem I had is his tendancy to call the same people repeatedly. One class I kept a tally; I was called 3 times for every 1 time anyone else in the class was called.

you are all very critical, and are just mad that you are not one of the people he deemed worthy enough to talk to. he talks to the people that show genuine interest, and it is your decision to put effort into the class or not. He is a very smart man, and he alone made his class worth going to.

Agreed with a former student.. the whole semester he picks on like 3 main people to answer questions.. I had missed the first class because of surgery so I came to second class asking hey what did we do and he constantly called on me to answer questions from the reading and then nonsense questions on hey how do you kill a cow? WTF Lets just say I email him and told him how it is and he needed to buck up his teaching skills or I was turning him into the DEAN! I made it out of his class with a B. He's rude
