Lectures are a very dense amount of information in a short amount of time. She talks fast, & if you dont do the required reading youll be completely lost in lecture. She gets off topic at times, but never for too long. It is obvious she really enjoys teaching this class which makes for an inviting learning environment.

I took Professor Bassi my first quarter at UCSC and she exceeded the expectations of what a professor here would be like. She knows a ton about the ancient Greek world and you will learn a lot. Make sure to read and attend lectures because like previous rater said, slides won't do. A decent knowledge of antquity would help you of course

Such an amazing class. Karen is so enthusiastic, and dedicated to the subject. Make sure you go to the lectures because the slides she shares on Canvas will not be enough to get you through the essays or the tests.

She's super brilliant and quirky, but this class was excessively hard for an introductory course. Even if you attend the lectures and keep up with the reading you have to put in an excessive amount of effort to do well.

Karen is magnetic! She not only kept me awake at 830 AM but rekindled my love for literature with profound thoughts and commentary on the class reading. And, while the reading was heavy, it was relevant and fascinating. Karen is a wealth of knowledge and I will bend over backwards to take any possible courses with her again!

She is a very lively teacher, but I never understood what she was talking about in lecture, which was mandatory unfortunately. Everything I learned from this class came from section. It was pretty easy, I only read two of the assigned books and did pretty good.

Do not take this class for a GE. Lecture is mandatory, and you get marked tardy if youre more than 3 minutes late (even though its an 830 lecture). Sections are also mandatory. Course books costs over a 100 dollars, and you only spend a week or less on one. You have to write a bunch of papers as well, so if you want to take this as a ge, DO NOT.

She made class constantly entertaining/interesting! A little back & forth during lecture but not really a problem. Lots of reading, but just pay attn. in class and take decent notes! Definitely worth it.

She has a good sense of humor. The only downside was the rather large amount of assigned readings.

i thought her class was awesome!! (aside from the mandatory sign in). this class is what made me switch to a lit major!! if you like the subjects, then you'll love her lecture. she doesn't have a great eye for t.a.'s though (mine was horrible!!). but she has a great sense of humor and loves what she knows!!

I actually enjoyed going to this class. Her enthusiasm towards Greek Myth is overwhelming. Her lectures wander a little, but I found it easy to pick up her scattered pace after a few classes. She is so knowledgable, and excited to share, totally awesome class....but only if you are interested in the material...LOADS of reading.

A lot of work and a lot of material to cover, but definitely worth it in the end. Hated taking this class, but after it was over found the material and her treatment of it very useful in later classes. She was very excited about her subject as well, which is always good.

Very heavy reading load and boring lectures. However, to be fair, I'm not the hugest fan of theory to begin with.

Most excellent reading material although her lectures tend to be simple explications of them -- on the flip side, if you're behind in the reading the lectures are almost useful. A painfully huge work load. I'm a straight A student and I can't keep up.
