Comment:
I wondered in class, "Is he this retarded on purpose?" It's my opinion that his racist and offensive thoughts on the internment of Japanese Americans during WW2 should not be shared. The best part of his class was when he claimed that California imports all of its water and a student pointed out that this is untrue for the Bay Area.

unless you are very much into history and its THEORY side; you shouldn't take this class. I've taken a buttload of AP courses in history and i was NOT prepared for this class. BUT the history majors that were in the class looked like they were having a blast so...

Outstanding professor: formidably intelligent, clear and focused speaker (who lectures without notes or slides), helpful and accessible in class and office hours, and hilarious in a rather bitter way (think of him as a nicer reincarnation of Ambrose Bierce). Deeply dedicated to the discipline of history; you WILL hone your skills in his class.

The Best Lecturer Ever. He makes up his lectures as he goes along. I am straight and find him to be damn handsome, he's like the Indian Jones of the history department. But seriously, he is the best lecturer I have ever had. Brilliant, concise, informative and relatively unbiased. He teaches history as it is, and as it should be.History and Theory

His lectures were fantastic and had nice opening and conclusion. Reiterates his main points and arguments. He is also quite savvy on historiography, which was a really helpful slant that the class had. However this is the first class where I wasn't graded fairly, but that was on his TAs, not him. Kind of rushed during office hours, but still nice.

His lectures are amazing and incredibly enjoyable. His assignments could be weird as our last paper was a film analysis with no connection to history. Finish your paper early and get help from the TA's on it! Also, he won't go over the reading much at all in class so you have to be really on top of it as there's a lot.

This class is interesting, with enthusiastic, clever lectures that sound like they were planned for hours. There is a lot of reading, but he recommends that we only spend about 45 minutes "going thorough" each piece of reading to get the main idea. Papers were straight forward and fairly graded. Not much preparation for the final, but a fair test.

As everyone has noted, his lectures are very enjoyable and he is a very cool guy. But grades are determined by GSIs. I'm a history major-I didn't feel they graded fairly.Reading load can be hard to keep up with, and some assignments take some getting used to.Notetaking can be exhausting. Good class for AC requirement, but don't expect it to be easy.

Excellent lecturer. Really interesting and funny. Clear and easy to understand. His lectures are great because he strings together different stories and shows how they fit together in a specific theme (the style keeps you engaged). Class was much more interesting than I anticipated.

Great lectures- go to them. Your grade is based on 2 short essays worth 1/6 of your grade, a longer essay worth 1/3 of your grade, and a blue book final worth 1/3 of your grade. The essays are probably unlike any you've done before (one asked you to interpret changes in topagraphical maps) but if you put in some effort you'll do well.

Klein might just be one of the best history lectures you cant get at Berkeley. He is very funny and has a unique insight to California history. The class has 3 papers and a final exam. Make sure you really talk to your GSI about the papers. Klein is not clear about what he wants from the papers and it is your responsiblity to talk to the GSI's.

Klein's probably the best lecturer ever! Each lecture is a mini historical narrative and really interesting. There's some disconnection between Klein, the GSIs, and readers, which makes it hard to prepare for the papers/final. If you can, find out who's your GSI! Do the reading and prepare early. Ended with an A and I'm not even a history major.

Ok, I like this professor as a lecturer. Each lecture stands on its own, with its own thesis. However, history majors should avoid this class as it is way too big. For an upper-div, I want to deal with a professor, not grad students. Papers are just exercises in writing and boring as all hell. No midterm means no good prep for a huge final. A waste

He is HOT. Besides that, he is a wonderful lecturer. Keeps your interest. Hilarious. GSIs are helpful, but they were hard graders, IMO. The final wasn't too bad, just do the reading. And there's A LOT of reading.
