He wasn't good at lecturing. If you are taking his class, be prepared to study on your own. His midterm and final are all free responses. He is teaching beyond CHEM1A level like OChem stuff. However, he gives past year exams that are identical so you can practice.

Prof. Bartels' class is definitely not an easy class to take, do not take it if u are not willing to put effort into studying outside of class. Homework is a lot, and is also on weekends and breaks. He gives a lot of EC in clicker/discuss. and wants u to succeed. Very smart professor, not only did I get an A, but I learned so much from this class.

He DEFINITELY is not as hard as people say he is in this thread. I was terrified at first but he goes back or pauses on a slide if asked. LOTS OF EXTRA CREDIT plus clickers are bonus so do go to lecture. Free response but imo thats easier because he takes questions directly from past exams that he releases at the start of the quarter. STUDY THOSE!

Midterm and final is free response but he gives practice ones which are really similar so study those. You need to go to lecture since he does clickers and they are extra credit and attendance. Do your homework with peers to try and maximize your points. If you took AP Chem then this class should be easy. Turn in your lecture notes for ec!

He's definitely not as bad as people say he is. The midterm and final are identical to the practice questions. He gives homework everyday which actually helps boost your grades in the end. There are also clicker questions which are bonus points. The class was good

A lot of people complain about Bartel's accent but honestly if you just pay attention to class and don't fool around, its really easy to pass his class. He works to tell you what will be on the test and focuses on those topics. He has lots of clicker questions for extra points just in case, giving you quite the leeway. Do the hw! Goes a long way.

Gives nightly homework that doesn't relate to the material discussed in class. Midterm and final study guides are almost identical to the test, so just study those - but even then, all his tests are short answer and nothing is curved. He was impressed that "only" half of the class failed the midterm. Lectures are a huge waste of time.

Homework is worth 30% of this course. His homework is pretty tough and you can't always find reference material online for help. You really have to work with your peers and ask for help from the TA's/ Professor (you really can't afford to be introverted in this class). His exams are fair. He is very kind and smart I enjoyed having him as a prof.

Bartels does give a lot of homework (almost daily), but only the top forty count towards your grade. While his exams are free response, he is a relatively easy grader and gives a lot of extra credit. Also, there are almost always clicker questions each lecture. He gets the material across very well and prints out the slides for you. Great teacher!

You don't actually know how to study. You can't find the reference online. Attending is mandatory, but it's just wasting of time.

The class is not an easy A for sure, but the professor offers many opportunities for extra credit that you should take advantage of (clickers). The midterm and final were both free response. Questions from midterms were reused so using your midterms to study for the final is helpful. Discussion questions sometimes pop up on the exam.

This class was definitely a challenge. You really have to pay attention in class and really understand the concepts in order to do well on the midterm and final, which are both free response questions. The exam questions are nothing like the homework or discussion questions and they are very broad. read the textbook to understand the material.

Show up to his lecture every day because he gives daily clicker questions (he has this dumb policy that if you get one clicker question wrong, the whole day's points are lost)He's the only chem1A prof that has given a written midterm/final and because of that you actually need to understand the material. no textbook needed unless you want more info

Professor Bartels is a good instructor. Hes available during office hours and tests you on info he mentions in class- I never used the txtbk. Reading these comments over the summer made me very nervous, but if you do the homework, attend lecture, disc. , and SI, youll do great! There are so many extra credit opportunities to help boost your grade

Yikes. Free answer midterm and final. there's 2 midterms and he chooses the better one, but really gets you down by saying most people fail. not all homework is mandatory, but there is a minimum you need. exams are nothing like the homework. clicker questions in class are mandatory or you lose 5 points (you'll need a clicker the first lecture!!)

This is probably the most difficult class you can take at UCR. Don't take this professor if you dont have to. Midterm and final where free response only. Topic covered were beyond the standard chemistry 1A material. Unnecessarily difficult class.

Prof Bartels will make you work for it. All of his exams are free response questions. Everything on the test he teaches, but the questions on the exam are not really emphasized during lecture. Like he'll spend a minute on a slide and that slide will be on the midterm. Make sure to not miss any classes because of the clickers.

His clicker questions at the beginning and sometimes end of lectures really saved my grade. Midterms and final were FRQ's and asked insanely difficult questions that even my genius friends couldn't answer. Introduced OChem and Quantum Mechanics to a GenChem class for some reason. Made easy concepts difficult. Even his TAs didn't know how to help us

Holy crap, where do I even begin with this dude? His tests are disproportionately harder than the other professors' (FRQ only vs. some multiple choice), terrible lecturer who overcomplicates simple topics, assigns homework even over breaks when some people can't access the internet, and just constantly makes things far harder than needed. AVOID!
