He's no doubt a great professor. He challenges every aspect of what you thought writing was. His unconventional prompts helps you re-evaluate yourself sense the drafting process is broken down into different segments. However, he could revise his own feminist interpretations. It could have been helpful if he had added more female secondary sources

Def not for the butt-hurt crowd. The Art of the novel, though, is the best class I've had at LC. Great structure helps with the massive amount of reading. I only wrote a couple of emails, but prof. Asher answered both of them within hours. Maybe a 200-level course, but worth it whatever the number.

I took his Shakespeare class and it was great. A lot of reading. I felt that if I read along while watching the plays I did a lot better. I was careful to only miss 3 classes, he says you drop a letter grade. His final exam is very difficult. He gives you fair warning to prepare ahead of time, but it's mostly knowing quotes.

Comment:
Lyell Asher is far too demanding of a teacher for a 100 level class. He is one of the hardest grading professors you will ever experience, and his organization skills are an absolute train wreck. Hes totally unreliable, and never responds to emails until its too late. Signing up for his class was the biggest mistake I made all year. Beware.

Lyell is my favorite professor by far. I've always loved English but The Art of the Novel blew me away and I read books with completely new eyes now. Lyell isn't a pushover which I learned to like because I'm used to teachers taking my slacking. He's so passionate about the works and often gets into fits of giggles over particular passages.

Probably one of the least compelling English classes I've taken. Doesn't seem to have a strong grasp on what year it is. Gives the most specific quizzes every week, you have to study for hours or you will not do well but claims they are simply incentive to read. Talks about his atheism too much. The only compelling part was Chaucer, surprisingly.

Lyell is a life changing professor. He is no doubt tough and not exactly warm and fuzzy but if you are ready to work he will make you an amazing writer. I truly loved every second in The Art of the Novel Class. So many mind-blowing revelations.

Asher runs an amazing class. He manages to make a survey class bearable and entertaining despite his distaste for the required brevity. You will not read as many works as other sections, but what you loose in breadth you gain in concentration and connection between text. His is incredibly tough and initially intimidating, but honestly the best prof

Asher is one of the best teachers I've had in a while. He gives good feedback on your writing and pushes your boundaries as a writer with different (although narrow) perspectives and a different type of writing format.

I took Lyell's Art of the Novel class my freshmen year and absolutely loved it. Lyell is definitely tough and NOT for those who aren't serious about learning to write and read. That said, if you commit yourself to the work and to improving, Lyell will definitely see and advocate for you throughout college. One of my favorite professors!

By far the best professor I have ever had. I worked very hard and got a C. He is the reason my mind was turned on. His enthusiasm for writing, specifically Tolstoy and Nabokov rival any enthusiasm I have ever seen a human being have. It takes a special sort of sensitivity to teach a topic such as literature and he does it well. Take his class!

He's awful, he will make you cry and tell you you're a terrible writer. He literally told me that he made up a grammar rule and that I wouldn't find it in any books.....but of course I had to follow it.

This class is hard and you will work for a good grade, but if you are willing to put in the time and effort, your writing will improve in leaps and bounds. Asher is a very personable, interesting fellow, and class is never boring. Take the class if you want to improve your writing, not if you plan on coasting through yet another English course.

Asher is a brilliant lecturer, you will learn a lot just sitting there and listening to him. Unfortunately if you want a decent grade, you are looking at the wrong teacher. His essay style is unlike anything any English class has ever prepared you for, you will do badly on them. His quizzes are microscopically specific. Memorize all readings.

I graduated from LC 9 years ago, and to this day I remain profoundly grateful for the knowledge and skills I gained taking Lyell's classes. He was by far the best Professor I had at LC. He is incredibly insightful, inspiring, and very very funny. He helped my writing immensely, and he was the reason I chose English as my major. I owe a lot to him.

Brilliant professor. Lyell is everything you could hope for in a professor- incredibly intelligent, always open for discussion, very helpful and insightful with his criticism, and hilarious. If you do the work, you are going to get so much out of class time. Best professor I've had at Lewis & Clark.

Shakespeare's Early Works was, without a doubt, the best class I took at Lewis & Clark. It was also the most difficult. Lyell will change your life, but only if you listen to him very, very carefully. Also, you must read all plays and supplementary materials at least four times a piece. Trust me-you'll be glad you did.

This class is very hard-if you must have an A, don't take this class. That being said, Asher is extremely insightful and knowledgeable. While his essay style is unconventional (no thesis/intro), his comments on graded papers are second to none. Your writing WILL improve. Class can get a bit dry at times but Asher does have a sense of humor.

I am frustrated that Asher does not get more credit. Yes, he is hard. You are going to work your ass off for a B, but I promise you, you will covet that grade. He is so knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and really cares about your writing. Dont take him for a GPA boost, take him because you care about the subject. Best ENG professor in the department.
