Comment:

Balmaceda herself is not a bad person, but her teaching is not great. While she has amazing world experience, her class has no structure. The brightest in our class often felt lost, and the readings were long and confusing. We had a major group project that was worked on throughout the semester and she gave good instruction and feedback on.

She assigns a ridiculous amount of reading, expects every student to have an extremely in-depth understanding of every assignment without explanation, & she's displeased if you share an interpretation that doesn't align with hers. The tests are nit-picky and her expectations are unclear. Don't take her, you will hate the experience.

Doctor Balmaceda will ruin your interest in Diplomacy. Even if you manage to get an A, it is the most unfulfilling grade that you could ever receive. I am only writing this because I care about you future students.. you should never have to suffer through her teaching style.

Dr. Balmaceda is arrogant, rude to students as she is incredibly condescending. She has NO grading criteria for tests, essays, or projects but still has the audacity to be a tough grader. don't even think about refuting your grade because she is unhelpful and nasty during office hours. I have never felt so disrespected by a professor.

The class is poorly organized, the assignments are vague at best. There was no feedback on anything, and when asked to clarify students were met with rude and condescending comments. There is no class discussion, just awkward jumping form reading to reading. I learned nothing. She is downright disrespectful to students. DO NOT TAKE

She isnt easy but she is bright and u can learn alot. She may have had "class favorites" but they were the people who did the reading and gave a shot at an answer and participated. if you sit there like a lump, what do you expect? she gives you an outline of what will be discussed - follow it, take notes, read and you'll do well

Comment:

Arrogant and hostile. Has class favorites and assumes everyone else does not belong. Don't take this class if you're not already interested in Russia, she touches very little on regions outside of Eurasia. Her own English is not perfect, yet she expects papers and exams to be flawless. Would not recommend, especially your first semester.
