I had him last semester and, frankly, it was a total waste of my life. His lectures were a chore. I don't think anybody in that room learned anything at all. He was terribly boring, and I think he honestly thought he was clever. Pitiful. Some people are simply just not meant to teach.

Dr. Graves is an amazing professor! He made Southern Lit very enjoyable with his funny anecdotes and quirky personality. He requires a lot of writing for this class, which he gives good feedback on. I appreciated his willingness to work with us on deadlines and his fair grading on assignments. Take him if you havent yet!

His lectures are interesting, mainly because he gets sidetracked and will ramble about pop-culture topics like the royal family or social media. He dresses fabulously and is a genuinely good person. It's hard to get an A because there's so few assignments. The readings are good but if you don't read, he'll just tell you what happened.

No tests in this section. Only papers, that were time consuming but you're allowed to revise after he edited. He is specific on what to change, so grade can be brought up. Lots of open book quizzes online that were easy grade boosters. Allowed to miss 4 times with no consequence and you do not have to warn him about it. Lenient and understanding.

I was in four of his online graduate courses. Among other things, I learned how to streamline my writing style (notice that I omitted the word "that" in-between "is" and "I"; a minor example of how he taught me to remove a lot of 'garbage' words). Provides a the right mixture of constructive and positive feedback. A good professor.

Dr. Graves is a fantastic professor. He can be tough, but his constructive criticism stems from the fact that he sees something great in you and wants to help you become a better writer and critical thinker. I've had 2 of his classes and can honestly say he's one of MSU's finest. He's funny, charming, and taught me a lot about literature.

Everyone can improve on writing. Take this guy if you want to doubt your ability to form sentences or speak English. Grading makes no sense. One day you get a compliment, on the next assignment you nearly fail. He expends NO ENERGY on theoretical arguments--he doesn't know what they are. This guy's obviously never read Cixous or Spivak.

Highly recommend taking Dr Graves for Writing 1. He's very helpful and explains thoroughly. Attendance does matter though. You miss a lot if you miss a class.

Dr. Graves is by far one of the best professors I've had at MSU. His assignments are relevant and challenging, yet he is more than willing to help and answer questions if you have a problem. He does not belittle or make you feel dumb for asking for clarity in an assignment. I would absolutely take one of his classes again given the opportunity.

Very good professor who provides clear and useful feedback. This was a graduate level literature class, so several books, but clear assignments, feedback and interaction.

He is extremely helpful. This is the first class where I learned significantly more than Google could teach. He gives his opinions, but respects others as long as they are documented. He takes his time in grading and offers really constructive criticism.

I took him for both 341 and 342. He's a diva and the reading can be dry, but he gives lots of opportunities. I don't suggest taking him if you know you'll have trouble turning in blackboard assignments on time.

He gives pretty much a book of "class notes", which are his opinions of the text. Everything is about HIS opinion. If you don't quote back his statements, you're apparently wrong. Other than that, he's an okay guy.

Witty, pretty helpful, very straightforward. If you do poorly in the class it's your own fault because he gives you just about everything you need to know about the text through class notes on BB. If he quotes a passage in class, MARK IT. And he says "okay" a lot!

Dr. Graves is overall a good professor. He likes to use blackboard and webmail a lot for assignments. He claims that he's more frightened of his students than they are of him, and I believe him. I would recommend him.

He is an alright teacher. Cares about the subject and what not. GOD FORBID you ask him a question though, especially if it is a question someone has already asked. He talks to you like you are a piece of dirt he walks on. I wouldn't take him.

I can honestly say Dr. Graves has made me a better writer. His teaching method taught me to focus on what I needed to say and learn to say it with brevity. I know he's hard and his pages and pages of notes and instructions can seem scary and confusing, but its about learning to write and read at an advanced level.
