I took philosophy of life as a humanities credit. It was a 4 week summer session course. There is a lot of reading, and the final is a good chunk of your grade. However, if you do the reading, show up to class, participate in lectures, and care to learn, this class will change your life. I will be taking his Asian Philosophy class as well.

So I've had Marty before for Asian Phil, and that was fine. This class was definitely the hardest I've had in college. Lectures were lengthy and confusing and so were readings, and there were no vocab sheets despite so many Sanskrit words with definitions to memorize. I worked harder than I ever have but don't feel I learned anything.

Marty's a fantastic guy. My only complaint is that, even though I wasn't wrong in some of my papers/exam answers, he counted off because I wasn't thorough enough. Especially in the Buddhism and Hinduism sections, this is a challenge because it's so dense. Lectures are incredibly thorough and though the syllabus seems daunting, he can be flexible.

Marty's fantastic, but this class was a little rough. He explains the concepts incredibly well, but there's a lot of reading that I had a hard time keeping up with. Several pop quizzes per unit, three papers, four exams. Tests are extremely lecture-based, so if you skip, there's no way you'll do well. His feedback is great, and so are his examples.

Marty Heitz is so awesome! He really cares about our success. Asian philosophy is not an easy A. You have to work, but this class has changed my life! If you want to be enlightened, take this class. To make an A, just use the study guide and really try to understand the concepts on a deeper level. I highly recommend Dr. Heitz, he is the best.

Hes a nice Proffessor tried to be bias, he graded harder than my comp Proffessor though. Test were kinda hard but really short a few multiple choice and 2 paragraphs at the end. 2 page paper maybe 3 times I almost got a B in the class but did the extra credit and managed to pull an A so its possible you usually get better as the semester ends.

Great class! Really opens your mind. Took for honors credit. There was a lot of reading and quite a few quizzes, but I loved the lectures and material. Heitz is a great professor.

Professor Heitz is my favorite professor i've ever had! I always left his class feeling inspired. Quizzes are tricky, but he offers a lot of flexibility with grading and extra credit. Learned so much from him and the class, you won't regret it!

Sorry that I had a tough semester with a professor that so many others appreciated. Had to go stick up for my grades in his office hours, felt like he expected us to read his mind rather than answering the questions he actually supplied. Very passionate and obviously a brilliant guy, but I guess philosophy just isn't for me.

I have taken his Eastern Philosophy class as well and I enjoyed both that and existentialism class. My one complaint is that philosophy is a very subjective thing, and sometimes he seems to apply his objective views to it, but then again he has to grade according to something. Sometimes that got alittle frustrating but I greatly enjoyed the classes

Marty was so great! He is a fascinating man and lots of fun. He makes the foreign concepts easy to understand. He does have lots of pop quizzes but they arent hard at all if you even just read over the study guides before class. You do need to make sure you go to class because he takes attendance but it's worth it to participate.

Class can be somewhat boring. He is very knowledgeable about philosophy, so if you have questions be sure to ask. Study the outlines to prepare for the quizzes. Be sure to read the material, otherwise, you won't know what's going on. Moderately easy essay grader as long as you understand his basic concept for his essays.

Good course for honors phil credit. The reading was time consuming though. 400Pt class. He drops lowest quiz grade, gives a 20+ easy extra credit, but doesnt show essay grades till the end of the semester. Some of his explaination were vague and hard to grasp. Gave study guides that were very similar to quizzes which helped alot.

Loved this class! Dr. Heitz really showed an understanding for what he was teaching and it definitely helped the class be interested. The quizzes are extremely difficult if you don't do the reading, but the style is great. Not an easy course, but he is willing to help anyone who comes to him.

Alright class. Lectures are sometimes interesting, but often boring. Quizzes are pretty easy if you read the book and study guide. Journals can be quite difficult to write, but grading is not harsh at all. Be warned that his class is VERY different from other sections of Phil 1213.

Took Ethical Issues Across Cultural Perspectives. Did not interest me at all. And it is difficult to please him with your writing. So much reading and all homework is writing essays. It's really hard to keep up with the reading because there is so much assigned. I made a B trying my absolute hardest. Hated this class, Heitz was alright but boring.

All he does is lecture. Nothing is engaging about his class, and I love philosophy. All we do is write journals and essays, and if he has a clashing opinion, he will be really subjective in his grading. When I told him that I enjoyed Christian philosophy, my grade immediately dropped on all my essays. None of his comments are constructive.
