I'm going to be honest he's old and boring... Classes drag on.. he once read 4 pages of Thoreau aloud to the class.. couldn't tell you why. Not MUCH work, but a lot of reading. Work is writing based, not exam based. I wouldn't recommend, but he isn't the worst.

His Honors English class on surveillance can be pretty interesting, coming from someone who usually dislikes all English classes. Minimal reading and you can easily get bye with a good grade doing the homework assignments before class. He is super passionate about what he teaches. Lectures can get a little dry, but participation definitely helps.

Prof. Orvell has a peculiar sense of humor, however, he cares about what he teaches. I had trouble with some of the assignments and he helped me out a lot one-on-one. Very interesting man.

Orvell is a genius and a pleasure to hear speak. He's very funny as well, if you're paying attention. As for difficulty id say its pretty average, if you don't have enough interest to memorize things like publication dates of major American works you won't do well. If I werent about to graduate I'd take just about any class he taught in the future.

I will give it to him that he knows his stuff. Lectures are painfully dry. I have to fight to stay awake. Exams, ha, good luck. If you're a decent writer then you should be fine with papers.

Orville has got his system and he definitely sticks to it. You can tell he likes some material more than others, and so obviously some things are easier to learn from him. Study for the exams. They're tough but no essay portion which is cool. Loved his dry sense of humor.

somehow makes an already boring topic even more boring. his lectures are impossible to follow. he is culturally insensitive as well as boring. requires attendance for a 100-student class. I'm dreading the exams.

Miles Orvell is the man. A fabulous teacher. Admittedly, his class is very difficult and labor-intensive. But you're going to learn immense amounts of stuff. And he's not boring. He cares about his students doing well, and that is the mark of a great professor.

Am Lit 2, really knows what he's talking about. Mid-term and final are very difficult, but do the readings (maybe twice) and you should be fine. 4 750-900 word essays and the two exams

You would have to be seriously deficient to think this class was hard. Yes, you have to do the readings and put thought into your papers, but what do you expect from an English class? Dr. Orvell is an amazing lecturer, and I learned more in his class than in any of the other surveys. If you study for the exams they are easy. Definitely take him!

Very intelligent man but class is impossibly hard. The midterm and final are set up to destroy you and any hope you have of passing them. Picks obscure quotes are requires you to understand and know as much as he does. Your only hope to pass is to write two decent papers and pray your TAs don't screw you

This was by far the hardest class I've had at Temple ( Surv. of Am Lit II) I had to withdrawal after the first exam because it was so incredibly hard. You have to have a COMPLETE command of all texts covered in class and be able to identify obscure lines from them. The class was interesting but SO SO SO impossibly hard.

Professor Orvell is not an easy teacher. You have to dissect every reading in order to survive the midterm and final exam. He is a great lecturer and a nice guy. Attendance is required. Hope for good TA's that aren't ridiculous graders, too.

Gave me a B+ because I got an 89.35, but I guess I should have worked harder. Class is very monotone and repetitive. Do the readings, take notes, write a decent paper and do well on the midterm and final (Which are the same structure) and you'll manage a B. Very meticulous professor, he has alphabetized seating that I found very elementary.

Nice man, with a real wealth of knowledge. Class was entirely lectures, which is a bit boring to me, but I knew that going in. Good assignments and exams with very detailed explanations and directions.
