Dr. Chawla was terrible, I do not recommend taking this class with him. None of the assignment's grades were posted on blackboard. The last exam was significantly tougher than the other 2 and when I asked if I could review the exam, he wouldn't let me. terrible

Comment:

Dr. Chawla is an extremely difficult professor. However, I did come out of the class knowing that I've learned a lot. I would recommend knowing everything that he says in the lectures and the textbook is super important for clarification and thoroughly understanding the topics. You will work hard in this class.

Comment:

Mechanics is a tough class; the homework and tests are hard and the material isn't conceptually easy. But if you are taking the class, Dr. Chawla is the professor to take it with. The lectures are straight-forward, he encourages questions and responds to them well. Go to office hours if you are stuck. He is a great professor and will help you.

Comment:

Tests are not reflective of homework which are more calculation based, the test are more concepts from books and lectures. Also he gives now study guides for tests and expects you to know everything he covered in lectures even though a fraction of it with we covered on the test. There 30 concepts covered on one exam and he only asked 9 questions.

Comment:

Fracture fatigue course by Dr. Chawla is a really solid course for understanding the behavior of materials under different loading and environmental conditions. I really enjoyed it because I love materials and this course actually covers all the relevant theories and mechanisms occurring in materials.

I've had Dr. Chawla twice, and I have thoroughly enjoyed both classes. You will learn a ton about material science and state of the art research. Excellent use of powerpoint and overhead makes the topic easy to learn. Tests reflect content from lectures and require critical thinking to apply concepts.

A very good instructor, I was on line and he went out of his way to help all on-line students. He was very knowledgeable in his field. His tests and out of class work was very reasonable. All in all he cared about his students and is very dedicated to the sciences. I hope that I get the opportunity to take other classes with this professor.

Awesome Professor! Extremely helpful with a great background in the field. He does his best to make us learn the concepts, critically think and apply them. Few complained about the course being tough but if you really want to learn about the materials, an amazing guide to assist you with. Highly recommended if you want to learn and have some fun!

Comment:

Prepare for weekly quantitative homework and about four tests with no cumulative final. Plenty of other undergraduates complained the tests were too difficult, but I found them to be reasonable. The important thing to know is not just the concepts, but why they matter and how they are interrelated. Professor is smart, explains questions very well

Chawla is a great professor! His lectures are a good pace, leaves plenty of time for questions, and is available both during and outside of posted office hours. Tests are conceptual and very difficult; homework is quite helpful.
