If by some horrific karma you end up in this class, I'm sorry. He has very specific demands but doesnt give enough feedback to achieve them. His lectures are bottomless pits of the kind of questions you get when you say "there are no stupid questions" and all of the condescending eye-rolling and insults to follow. Unavailable for one-on-ones also.

All we would do is review/ask questions about a philosophers book all class period. There were no other assignments besides 3 essays based on 3 separate books. He made students answer their own questions by asking them MORE questions, which wasn't helpful. Getting higher than a B on an essay was rare... Canvas wasn't utilized by him either.

Dont take him. Even if you are right, it wont matter. It seems he never has a real point and he is very condescending. It is evident he has a inferiority complex and will shut you down if he feels threatened by your analysis being better than his. Avoid him at all costs, theres no point to lower your GPA for no reason.

Not going to lie this is the WORST professor I've ever had. The syllabus doesn't say attendance is mandatory and he doesn't check attendance. I've missed quite a few classes because of personal problems, and he called me out on it. The instructions he gives for papers are not clear enough, and he makes me feel stupid during discussions. HE IS RUDE

Classes were very discussion based. He will call on everybody so be sure to read the assigned readings before class before you embarrass yourself. Philosophy can be a very difficult subject to comprehend and understand but I feel as if Professor Schollmeier grades his papers using HIS opinion and if he doesn't agree with you, he'll grade you lower

Classes are more like discussions. He really tries to get all students involved to discuss the text so that as a class we can discover new things. Even though the style was different I enjoyed this class because he really broke down philosophers to a more modern day meaning.

He takes things back old school. Just a book and a thought. Big struggle is see with my peers is that they get caught up with real word definitions. Best is to try and define words that's the philosopher said instead of giving it a modern meaning. Be open minded and try to understand the philosophy. Annotate a lot in your book. It will help.

Incredibly condescending and isn't very specific on what he wants in the class. Syllabus states there is no attendance grade; however, mentioned within the last week that attendance counts. He makes it hard to participate because some discussions are difficult and he's too critical. He also isn't great with responding back to emails.

Overall the class was enjoyable. If you do the reading and participate in class discussion then you will get something out of it. Only problem is that the professor is extraordinarily unhelpful and unavailable outside of class, so unless philosophy is really your thing I wouldn't recommend taking him.

He's tough & expects you to know the material-as you should in a 400-level class. Participation is required & if you don't willingly do it, he'll call on you. Refer to part abt knowing material! Despite this, I enjoyed him as a prof -nice guy & I like that he has standards for his students. He also reminds me of my grandpa so maybe I'm biased.

5 weeks at a time studying 1 of 3 philosophers. Do the reading, or at least skim material before class. Lectures are discussion based. He always asks for evidence from the reading. Grade is based on 3 essays. Be clear and provide evidence. Not a tough grader. Optional final. Class drags on. Wants critical thinking. Not bad for philosophy.

If this was my first ancient philosophy class, I probably would have enjoyed it more. However, having taken at least three or four ancient philosophy classes, I found that Schollmeier's class did not stack up. Class discussions seemed to be intentionally confusing; Schollmeier appears to think that the "Socratic Method" is meant merely to confuse.

He is a great professor. As long as you take excellent notes, you will do fine on the essays. The final isn't mandatory, but if you take it, it could either improve or hurt your grade. He cares more about the quality than the quantity of the essay you submit, so he will still grade it even if it falls short of the minimum length requirements.

This Professor is one of the best professors I have taken in philosophy. Yes, be prepared to actually answer questions, what did Plato think of morality, if you answer truth, then be prepared to answer what is truth, etc...Yes, do the readings. Mark your readings because he will ask "where does he say that?" it is a famous quote by the professor!

Do NOT go to this mans class w/o doing the readings. This class only goes over Plato's Republic and some of Aristotle's works. And when you do answer a question (and he will ask them) be prepared for a "What does that mean?"-Socratic method my ass, it's just annoying.
