Ives is an awesome teacher! I knew from the moment I walked into his class and saw him wearing a cowboy hat and an earring in one ear that it was going to be a great quarter. All he expects from you is one essay per week. THATS IT! He is a gentle grader and always leaves feedback when he returns your essays. I 100% recommend you take his class.

I LOVE Ives! Hes so chill and really funny. All you need to do to get an A in the class is literally write ONE essay a week. An essay a week may seem daunting, but we go over what our topic for the week is and work in groups prior to turning in the paper. Very easy class. Perfect for running start students! 10/10

Rich Ives is given a bad reputation, which I dont get why. Especially for English 101. That class is easy overall but people blame the teacher. All he expects is an essay week and thats IT!!!! Like really. How hard is it to write an essay lol. Just think about it. I got 100% in his class and Im not an essay person at all (After this class I was)

He's a really cool guy and gives very good advice about how to write your essays. Doesn't use canvas so you can't check your grade for the class or know when he'll be gone. You wrote an essay a week, 2 days of lecture and understand that essay method, 2 days to work in your writing groups to edit your paper and help each other. Really cool teacher

really depends on the class you take. If you're going to take poetry, you might as well teach yourself! His english classes are great and really beneficial. He has an odd sense of humor.

I took a screenplay class, your grade depends on one test early on in the quarter and one 10 page screenplay due at the end of the quarter. In between all you do is listen to him read and analyze screenplays that students have brought in. Attendance isn't mandatory and you can find the textbook in a PDF.

I hated this class. He doesn't make any sense and two days every month, he skips and doesn't tell anyone he won't be there. So the entire class is waiting in front of his classroom for half of the class and then someone else comes to his door and says he's gone. Save yourself the pain. Don't take this class.

Don't buy the textbook. Show up 3 times. You will get an A. I went everytime, although it wasn't mandatory. He is laid back, has a dry sense of humor, and everyone will read your work anonymously and critique it from there. If you want tons of specific assignments, this guy isn't for you. If you are scared of taboo subjects, stay away. I loved him.

Mr. Ives is a consummate writing professional who knows the business, and has published essays, stories and textbooks. He is amusing with a low key teaching style using wit and humor. This approach is very successful, as students are encouraged to put their own thoughts on paper. Yes, you will write in his course and your writing will improve .

He leaves plenty of comments on your paper once he grades them and justifies why you got the grade you did. No criteria or topics. Only three in-class writes on the textbook readings. The books aren't mandatory because the next day he'll just go over the assigned reading in class. I enjoyed the class. He has an odd sexual sense of humor.

I took Fiction writing because my brother did, and I understand why he told me not to. Ives only grades 3 things the entire quarter, and he isn't even that clear with how he'll be doing it. I could've skipped the second half of the quarter and still passed the same. He doesn't actually teach how to write, and geez, not everything is a metaphor.

Took Ives for several sections in creative writing series with poetry and it was the material time and time again. I never learned anything on how to write a poem. I didn't learn how to become a better writer. He lectured critiquing everyone's work the same way with the same questions. Dull. Stuck in the box. Boring class!!!

hated this class. there was no clear instruction as to what we were supposed to do in that class. he gave us a test on the books we were supposed to read and the guide to what was to be expected on the test was extremely vague. the rest of the class we spent reading other classmates works.

Worst class I've ever taken. Not because I don't love poetry, or writing, because I do, but because the professor is impossible. Entire class is looking at others essays but never actually getting to talk about what they can improve on , just talking about "what is it about". IT'S BAD. DON'T TAKE IT.

Most of the class is discussing other student's poems but he doesn't let students discuss or he ignores/twists what's been said. Instead of giving advice he blathers on about changing the content entirely while makes mocking commentaries. He is not encouraging or inspiring (he made us buy books he edited/translated poems, both from 20 years ago).

Writing is fun! Not in this class though... 90% of the quarter was spent analyzing works brought in by classmates. The beginning was when we learned about Fiction Writing. After that, I wanted to fall asleep every single day, showing up to class just in case something happened (never did). Sketchy grading system (50% grade based on final project)

Such a stupid class. All you do is analyze others works for weeks on end and Ives is the kind of teacher that when the author says the curtains are blue, he thinks its something deep any meaningful when really they are just blue. Do not take. Waste of my time.

Loved this class! Teaches you writing beyond the formula( this is what I'm going to talk about, talk about it, conclude). All the readings are interesting and informative. All his lectures were fun, with freedom to express all opinions. I honestly feel my writing has improved more in this class than any other.
