A vivacious teacher, but lectures usually the entire class and then gives SO MUCH READING homework. SO MUCH. A LOT. Also quizzes you over this large quantity of reading homework.

Very knowledgeable on the subject matter, but is also personable and good enough at conversation to make talking about it interesting. In my opinion he gave me more points than I earned, but hey I'm not complaining. Made me really consider switching to history as a major.

Dr. Abels is a knowledgeable guy and will do everything to explain the material clearly, but he won't let you get by with broad generalizations. He is the only history professor at the academy that I've had who actually makes you memorize dates. Also, get ready to do a ton of reading. The information would be interesting if we had the time

The goal of this course was to introduce students to the history major, as well as learning how to write a research paper. I loved writing my paper, even though it was so long. There were pretty much weekly papers, but these were not too difficult, or graded too harshly. Class was discussion based, and a lot of fun. Professor is very knowledgeable.

Prof. Abels is my favorite teacher at the Naval Academy. Witty, intelligent, and a great teacher, Abels does his best to make you understand the material. He REALLY knows what he is talking about, considering he has written in many of the books used. The best medieval historian I know. You will work, but you will come out a better writer.

Prof Abels is a great guy. Even though he assigns tons or readings and papers, he's a fun old guy. Shows lots of movies and pictures, if you like the middle ages definitely take him, just be expected to write alot. He's very helpful though!

Critical on the writing for homework assignments so get used to doing them earlier enough to review them. Great about EI. Very good storytelling lecture style. Knows EVERYTHING. If you have to take a military history class take this one. Papers are fun, and he knows every book in the field. Always ask questions.

Class material is boring - history of our ancestors and why they did what they did; duh. But since you have to take the course, take it from him. He is hot!!!! And I'm a guy,.

This proves to be a great class if you want to learn a lot. However, that being said, it is neither easy (I wrote approximately 15 papers during the course) or extremely clear. It is taught topically so you can not follow anything choronologically. One day you will be in the 1300's and the next in 1150. Good professor though.

The more references you put in your papers, the better he likes it. Great guy, great class. He loves Monty Python too. Lots of opportunity for EC, take advantage of it.

He obviously is very well-versed in the material and makes lectures quite engaging. However I did find the workload a bit ridiculous (I wrote 12 papers for a 3 hour course) and I found him to be a bit self-absorbed and arrogant sometimes.

This guy is amazing. I always see if I can get through an entire semester without reading a single book, but I actually WANTED to do the readings for this class. Granted, it's not an easy class and I wound up doing a lot of work, but it was fun. His viewpoints are fascinating, and he is so passionate about his subject. Best prof at the academy.

Prof. Abels is extremely informed on his specialty which makes for great class discussion. He grades tough and assigns alot of reading, which makes it a harder-than-it-should-be 3 credit course. Take this class if you want to learn alot, but not if you want an easy A.
