Comment:

Even if you love or hate history, take US History with Prof. Cottrell. Not only is he overqualified for his job (he is the author of several history books), but he is passionate about history. He can answer every question with detail. He gives out a LOT of extra credit. The reading is through a book (as opposed to a textbook). Loved his class.

Comment:

Professor Cottrell is a very knowledgable teacher but his class is very difficult. I haven't missed a single class in the entire semester, went to office hours, got tutoring, and took good notes and I still have a C. There is a ton of reading involved which is boring and dry. Very hard to comprehend. Super hard class for a GE.

Comment:

I took this class to fulfill a GE credit as a freshman, if this sounds look you I recommend you avoid this class. No homework,however the text book is extremely detailed and boring. The slides are also poorly organized and the lecture often has nothing to do with what is on the test and quizzes. I went to tutoring & office hours but still failed.

Comment:

Professor Cottrell is very passionate about History and he is very knowledgeable, but his lectures can be sometimes difficult to follow. Notes are definitely mandatory for this class and paying attention. He usually assigns a book to read and there are quizzes on the reading. Overall, it was an interesting class, but I would not take it again.

Comment:

He knows his stuff although he moves along with the material awfully fast. His quizzes are easy but tests require overlooking notes multiple times. Whenever he tells one "I would know this" or "you should know this" that's usually a good sign it will show up on the test.

Extremely tough teacher, don't even know how he still is one, he gives you about 50 pages to read in one week and then the next week you have to read 50 in less than a half to be prepared for his quiz. His notes suck, he doesn't have any info on his ppt's, so you have to keep along with what he says but he talks too fast. No homework, just tests.

Take a different professor for U.S. History. I wish I would of looked at his ratings first. He makes me dread U.S. History and he's so boring. He doesn't provide you with a study guide, and his lectures are always rushed.

Professor Cottrell isn't a bad person but is a terrible teacher. We were required to buy five books and only used each book for a few chapters out of it. Class was extremely boring and did not relate to the paper we were required to write. Do not take him for 490 if you can.

2 weeks classes are horrible. His lecture is so boring and words are super large/Feel so hard to understand his point and need to repeat the lecture several times/ Quiz is ok but test are horrible. He loves to use his own words to describe everything and does not care about whether students can learn from his class!

If you can, do NOT take his class! He is terrible at teaching history. His lectures don't even help for the tests and are extremely boring. His quizzes and tests are online but are very difficult and we don't even get enough time to finish them. I would strongly suggest not taking him.

tests and quizes are all online, exams are super hard, quizes are easy. No role, but tests are on lecture. Dont actulally learn about WW2 or the cold war, but babe ruth and Muhammad Ali.

I appreciate the passion that this professor has for this course, but he is EXTREMELY boring and not helpful.His online lectures were all 45 minutes to over an hour and a half long.The exams & quizzes were based on lectures but he never made a point of exactly what we needed to know.He also included exam questions based off his own political view.
