LECTURES ARE SO HEAVY. YOU ARE EXPECTED TO READ 4 BOOKS IN 1 SEMESTER AND WHEN WE MEET ONLY HE TALKS THE ENTIRE TIME. It is so difficult to stay awake during his class. 1 midterm, 1 essay and 1 final. Not interesting at all. He is very passionate about the books himself but he does not make it interesting for the class.

He is super passionate about this subject which is always so nice to see. I would only suggest this class if you are interested in Chicano Studies. If you are not then I wouldn't do it. He is really nice and knows what he's talking about but again, if you are interested then i would take him. If you aren't then I wouldn't.

If you are taking this class just because you heard it is easy, I wouldn't recommend it because that's what I did and I dread coming to this class because it is so uninteresting to me. The professor speaks in Spanish a lot during class so if you don't understand Spanish you might be confused. All we do is read A LOT in this class and write a paper.

Even after I tried to logically talk to him about my grade, how the syllabus didn't specify the amount of pages he wanted for the final essay, and that I've missed a few classes because I got sick, he still wouldn't reconsider! Very unreasonable stuck in his own old way and doesn't care to help you pass unless you do it ONLY his ways!

Cantu has an expansive encyclopedic level of knowledge when it comes to literature as well as the history that informs it. If you can write a cohesive essays you will pass. CHS 312 consisted of 2 in-class essays and one 8 page research essay which is assigned at the start of the quarter and due at the end of it. He has high standards for students.

The description of the class in the syllabus doesn't match what you do in class at all, it seems like he hijacked the class to make it what he wanted. He is very passionate about what he teaches, so much that he expects everyone to be as passionate as he is.

While he is passionate about the subject he tends to go off on tangents that are not relevant to the readings. Good luck trying to get a word in edgewise. I once tried to participate and he went off on a tangent about something entirely different. Oh and he plays favorites, unless you're his favorite do not even try to participate.

he is quite knowledgeable and passionate, but he DOES NOT know how to properly teach a class and level with students! his lectures have no real structure and basically goes off on tangents the entire time. i had a hard time grasping points (if any) in his lectures.

Professor Cantu is very passionate in what he teaches. He knows everything, but has a hard time explaining. He is extremely strict with attendance he wants you to attend class and if you leave early he puts you on the spot. Overall, class is very boring but if you pay attention and work hard enough the class is doable.

Will not help you if you were absent. He will ignore your questions and make you feel like it was your responsibility even if you didn't miss on purpose. Very rude. And he does not make any sense about his expectations on your work. deducts points for any stupid reason.. my recommendation, dont take his class.

He is very passionate about his subject which I appreciated. However, he is not clear on what he wants on his tests. His grading system is not clear and he does not provide feedback on his tests. Take someone else for this subject. I didn't take into account the other comments here and I ended up with a B in the class. You have been warned.

This class is a complete waste of time. Although he is passionate about what he teaches, his lectures are scattered, unorganized, and completely irrelevant to the papers/final he basis grades on. DO NOT TAKE!

One of the hardest classes I have ever taken. In one quarter you have to read 4 books one of which is extremely long, learn everything about chicano history (from aztecs to the revolution), and be able apply that knowledge to the book you read. His lectures are scattered, no powerpoints not even outlines. He forgets to mention things in class.

This guy is terrible at teaching class. He spends the whole time lecturing with very little time given to allowing students to ask questions, and is dismissive of those that are asked. Also, like half his lecture time is in Spanish. Unless you are in love with Latin American Literature and also fluent in Spanish, NEVER TAKE HIM!

He would be really fun to talk to at a party. But as an instructor, he's awful. He never lets students talk IN A GRADUATE SEMINAR! He will get you excited about the topic but never give direction on the assignments. In an interdisciplinary program, only the person with a previous MA in Engl got an A. He may be an expert but he is not a teacher.

ALthough it pains me to say this, because he is one of the few Latino profs in the Eng dept and he REALLY knows his stuff and he is a nice guy but, HIS LECTURES were ALL OVER THE PLACE. He needed to fine tune, structure, and present his lectures in a clear and cohesive way. He has no notes and jumps rapidly from one topic and one author to another.
