really really nice professor, not sure why her ratings are bad tbh. Took her for senior seminar we had 2 papers done (one research paper) and a group presentation that was fun. films were boring but overall the class was easy, would take her for other classes 100%

I'm not sure why some people have such negative opinions of her on here. I think she is an amazing professor and knows so many things. Yes, she is opinionated but she seems to respect others. Honestly she is great

She wasn't my favorite professor and is kind of boring, but I took her twice for Film Noir and Senior Seminar in Film Theory. There's a good amount of readings, but not an overload of work/assignments. There's a group project, exam and a paper and she's a pretty lenient grader. So put in a decent amount of time and you'll be fine.

I took her for theories of women in film. she can be repetitive but her mind is sharp and shes very opinionated but very very open to discussion. she just wants to facilitate conversations. i enjoyed the readings (although they were difficult vocabulary) and felt i gained more of a grasp on film

The class was interesting, There are a lot of readings but it's really not that bad. If you ask for extra help, she's really understanding. Wasn't my favorite course and with the little effort I put into the work, I'm happy with my grade.

She's very oppinionated, borderlining flat out rude. She's accusatory and very unhelpful. Everything, EVERYTHING pertains to the subjugation of women, even when it's not supposed to. I don't feel like I took Film and Society, I took Film and Professor Flitterman-Lewis' Theories on Feminism.

Ridiculously awful. So full of herself, very rude to students. Doesn't explain why things are important, just assumes that since she knows, you know. Would not recommend her to anyone. She told us she reads these reviews, I hope you do.

Not afraid to assign challenging readings in the fields of feminist & psychoanalytic film theory. If you don't have the time or inclination to really attack the readings, you may only notice her scatterbrained lectures. That would be a shame - SFL is one of the most accomplished yet accessible professors in the humanities I've had at Rutgers.

Such a nice lady! She can be a little repetitive, but I definitely left the class knowing a lot about the subject. Very fair grader.

she's opinionated and painfully repetitive. Class lectures completely consist of students watching her bury her face in a paper or book, reading it as if she's forgotten that there are students sleeping on those hard ass-squashing seats. Bombed midterm, aced presentation and rushed on final theory paper. Ended up with a B.

Very unpredictable, but excellent nonetheless. She definitely knows her stuff so its hard not to learn anything from the class. If you have some experience in film, you'll do fine in her classes.

Has never finished a thought in class. Shows many low quality films. If you can take the class w/someone else (esp. Williams) do it. The film department at RU is pretty poor but this has been my most useless class. She might know her subject but she can't get it across to the class. Picks favorites and has personal conversations w/them in class.

She IS very opinionated and claims to leave room for other views but doesn't. If someone complains about her, she'll ask the class who it was and not give up. She reads all these comments and bases her teaching mood on it. She doesn't tell you what's on the paper. Every class she went on political tangents. She'll give you an A if she "likes" you.

she's amazing she knows so much about the subject matter. yes- she is very clear about her position on many issues, but she welcomes students input as well- allowing for great discussions every class. If you're too wrapped up in your own ideas/opinions then you won't appreciate her because she makes you think outside of your comfort zone.

Sandy has been my favorite professor thus far at Rutgers. She brings forth intelligent lectures about the cinema. Her film classes are also focused on film theory, which is far and away a wonderful and academic way to appreciate film.

I am not sure what the others are talking about. I think this woman is a terrible teacher. She is incredibly vague and goes off on tangents way too frequently. I had an interest in film before taking it, but she ruined the course. She must be a very easy grader in to get praise. I can see no other reason for liking her. (no grades for me yet)

Totally awesome prof.Very anti-bush haha and goes on rants but she's very open minded to different opinions.People think she's closeminded but she's not.Classes consist of watching movies and she really gets students to be engaged in her class.Makes time for you in afterhours and is real cool to talk to.A HIGHLY reccomend class and professor!

she's not like other teachers because she's a genius, unlike other teachers she doesn't hide behind discipline or rules. so that's why some students feel lost in her class, cause she's a hippy. but don't stress, she's very open minded and a fair grader. she's also the pioneer of women film theory.
