Comment:

His enthusiasm for Latin American history is contagious. In this senior-level class, he emphasized participation equal to (if not more than) lecture. Reading is necessary and somewhat heavy. The grading was mostly based on papers and presentations (only 1 test) this semester. He has high expectations but makes class fun. Would definitely take again

Comment:

You won't really need the textbook if you take GOOD class notes (recorders recc.); however, his lectures are pretty scrambled and he doesn't go over everything that will be on his exams. He doesn't use BlackBoard (Grade = ?). The Extra Credit will save you. You're basically left to your own devices, but if it can be helped, do not take his lecture.

Downsides: conceited, doesn't care about student success, hard to stay awake in lecture, impossible to know what to study, huge number of hard tests (5 or 6), a very long paper which he gives no topic for. Upsides: ----

Dr. Lewis is no doubt a hard grader. I recommend showing up to lectures every day because you will need to know as much information about the subject as you possibly can for his tests, which are mainly short answer. Your grade is mainly based on 4 "mid terms" and 1 final. Go to his office hours and he will be extremely helpful! Labs are a breeze.

Dr. Lewis is awesome! He is very laid back, however, he demands excellence when it comes to the exams (all of which were take home essays). I love his liberal views, and his commitment to his profession. Had I had this class earlier in my educational career, I would be an Environmental Earth Science major. I highly recommend this class.

tests are half fill in half multiple choice. you miss one question there goes a whole grade letter. he's SUPER liberal and nothing he lectures is relevant to tests. lab was easy - take a different lecture.

I actually ended up with an A in this class purely through extra credit and studying wikipedia. That said, worst teacher I've ever had. He goes off topic most of the lectures, which are boring. Massively liberal. Take someone else if you can, its an easy class but a hard and frustrating teacher. Did I mention he's in love with himself?

BEST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD!!! I almost changed my major after this class. Extremely knowledgeable, funny, though might show political views still great class. Looked forward to it everyday. Tests are hard, must study notes and read book. Grade is pretty much extra credit and tests. Highly Highly recommend.

I did not like this class, although I learned a bit about geology his tests are tricky, and mostly fill in. I had to fight falling asleep because he DOESN'T present material in an interesting way. He always shows his political views, he is so far left, Liberal does not apply to him, and OKAY get over yourself you ride a bike to school who cares...

He teaches rather quickly but you dont have much homework, only a presentation to do, then summaries on the other presentations in class. His quizzes are not that hard and gives a take home midterm and final. He really helps a lot if you go to his office hours for your presentation. Funny guy too, for being ancient.

super cool guy. kinda weird, but nice. i liked his class, but sometime i found myself falling asleep. don't go to his class after a long night because you won't rememeber anything thats said in his lectures. he is very scatterbrained, but has a genuine intrest in whats being taught.

quirky guy. dont need book if you pay attention in lecture & lab. goes off on tangents & is sometimes hard 2 follow along w/ during lecture/notetaking cuz hes kinda scatterbrain & all over the place when it comes 2 his style of lecture, but he does know what hes talking bout. he tests off lectures so GO TO CLASS, TAKE GOOD NOTES, & PAY ATTENTION!!

kinda quirky. decent guy. kinda scatterbrain with his notes & goes off on tangents a lot. kinda hard 2 follow sometimes when he lectures, but tests off of lectures so GO TO CLASS & TAKE GOOD NOTES. dont really need the book.. just pay attention in lecture & lab. pay attention in lab cuz it helps 2 understand what he talked about in lecture better.

He is a cool person overall. The way he teaches is completely different from his tests. Overall, I didn't like how he tried to teach the subject when the a lot of materials weren't even on the tests.
