Doctor Fukushima was my Japanese professor and Linguistics professor and he does teach both differently. Loves dad jokes. Homework is simple and easy, one group project that was really fun to do, two tests. He knows his stuff. Very knowledgeable in linguistic field. He can seem serious, but he is helpful and works through the language barrier.

Comment:
Fukushima's class is interesting, but frustrating due to the language barrier and his demeanor. He is a nice enough guy, but responds badly to ideas that are not straight from the textbook. He generally grades fairly harshly as well, and does not seem to have clear expectations. The biggest grades are a midterm "term paper" and the final.

Japanese is one of the hardest languages for Westerners to learn. Fukushima sensei makes it fun. If you put in the effort and show a willingness to learn, He'll sense that and help you understand as much as possible. Cannot recommend him highly enough. Also, having a native speaker helps massively.

Fukushima-sensei is a great teacher. He has high expectations, but will also extend a helping hand if asked. Getting a bad grade comes from failing to do the homework, not his 'terrible teaching'.

This class is not one I would recommend for most COMM majors. I took it because I needed another upper level comm class and was surprised at how difficult it was. I fought for my grade and ended up with a B but it was not easy at all. The material was quite foreign and difficult for an intro class.

Dr. Fukushima is a pretty nice guy, with that said, however, he is extremely bureaucratic. Attendance is mandatory and there are homework assignments due every class. I didn't miss one class and I got a C because if you do that homework wrong you get a zero.

This class requires attendance every day and your attendance is determined by the homework you have at the end of every class. The students teach many chapters out of the book. The overall content is not incredibly difficult but the amount of work is absurd for the class. Also, you teach a language to the class and it is the majority of your grade.

went in hoping for something fun-WAS very disappointed. Students teach the entire class. Class seemed VERY disorganized, nonsensical, and Though can be funny he bored the crap out of me. If not for forced attendance I never would have gone but on test and presentation day and prob. would have the same grade. Didn't teach me a single thing.

Fukushima's study abroad program was terrible. If you're looking to practice your Japanese, then look elsewhere. This program is more for those looking to do the American tourist thing (sightseeing, constant English, isolated from actual Japanese people). Every night there is a curfew, and going out with local Japanese students is frowned upon.

Linguistics with him was one of my favorite classes! It's not exactly easy, but if you go regularly you should be okay and you'll learn a lot. He's really funny and quirky, and super smart. He seems to know a little bit about everything. Make sure you make friends in the class, though, because your grade pretty much depends on group work!

I had many classes with Fukushima-Sensei. He is one of my all time favorite teachers; I wish he taught every Japanese class. Any question you think of, he can answer. People don't seem to like Lang. and Soc. and it is a unique method of teaching, but forces you to learn and make up your own mind about Japan's quirks, instead of him just talking.

Good teacher when he does teach. Funny as well. Language & Society of Japan, however, is made up of multiple student lectures on readings from book and online and then solo presentations based on a chosen topic. He does nothing but clarify information. Daily assignments require critical interpretation. Avoid if you are not fond of group work.

Very interesting linguistics course. He is an extremely skilled teacher and a professional yet friendly man. He is perfectly clear to understand and makes otherwise boring material fascinating. I would gladly recommend Professor Fukushima.

Fukushima is a pretty good teacher. His classes can be a bit repetitive, but that's the nature of learning languages. Still, he makes plenty of jokes (most of which are references to Food Network) to keep it interesting. He WILL make you earn your grade, but you'll learn quite a lot from him in the process.

This guy is the funniest foreign teachers I've ever had. This was my third class with him and he's always been a great help with each level. He's always been willing to answer questions on assignments that are due in the next 10 minutes. Since he's a native of Japan, he has lots of interesting and amusing lingual anecdotes.
