She's nice. Mid terms are easy. Plays japanese songs(you can email her if you like a song) everytime before class begins. Fails to clarify language systems clearly.

I had prior Japanese experience prior to taking her at UCSD for Jap20A, so the class was extremely easy. She tried to make it interesting, but the topics were dry most of the time. If you put in the effort, you get the grade you deserve. Don't take the class thinking you're going to ace it because you watch lots of anime.

This was a very hard class. I took Dhor for Jap 101 and got a B. That class was great and what I learned made my trips to Japan more intresting. Tipton's class was beyond what I needed.

Class is definitely fast paced. I loved it though. Lots of assignments and memorization. Language classes in-general are tough, so if your whining about it then obviously your not serious about it (Spanish and me = no-no). Tests are mainly based off of notes and homework. End of class essay should be easy to manage if you payed any attention.

Japanese is a VERY hard class. Put in the work (>1 hr per class) and you'll have fun though. Clear lessons & tons of verbal practice meant after just one class I could understand the language fairly well. Always willing to answer questions after class/during breaks. She NEVER lets it affect her grading, but you can tell she likes good students.

Good teacher. Handles a good amount of drills and reviews homework in class. Because of this, I found that I almost don't have to listen to the book tapes. The class is hard. No previous language (maybe Chinese) will help. You have to learn 2 syllabaries and kanji. This takes an hour of work *every* *single* *day*. Cope, or go take Spanish.

From a personality standpoint, I thought she was nice. From an educational standpoint, I felt she moved at the pace of the experienced students, leaving us beginners in the dust. I felt she should have done a better job at keeping the pace the curriculum under control, and not let the advanced students take over the class.

Isn't learning any Asian language SUPPOSED to be difficult? She's strict, but it can work to a student's advantage. If you're a slacker, she will treat you as such. If you want to learn, she will help you and treat you as such. Repetition is the key in the class and it helps - sometimes too repetitive though. Faito Tipton sensei! :D

Just finished her Summer class!!! It was quick and had to learn a lot of info in short amount of time but she made it fun, easy and understandable!!! She has good teaching method, her test aren't that difficult if you study and keep up with the homework. Her test are mainly right out of the book!!! Highly recommed Tipton Sensei!!

She is very strict, and while I know this is for her students' best interests, she is not very understanding of circumstances outside of your control. Her tests are difficult, mainly the dialoge parts. The best thing about her class is that kanji quizzes are separate from tests. Also, her lessons are straight from the book and seemingly unorganized
