Comment:

Wow. What a teacher, he loves his students, especially the young Asian ones. Just from reading his bio, you could tell he was a child prodigy destined for greatness. He is so good, he teaches from his very own textbook he wrote himself. We only had 3 easy programming assignments with extra cred and 2 extremely easy tests which I aced.

Comment:

Albert Cheng was extremely inspirational. His lectures were easy to understand and his notes were great. Programs and hw's were very easy (no more than 50 lines of code). Exams were in-class, however, you had partners and could work / discuss each question with so choose wisely.

Comment:

I took operating systems with Dr. Cheng and I really enjoyed his lectures. He lectures at a very manageable pace so that you can both take notes and listen to what he has to say. That being said, what he teaches in class pales in comparison in regards to difficulty to what you see on the tests he gives. Tests are ridiculous, hw is challenging.

His test are hard and he reviews the day before and the ones posted online will help but there will be problems that you will have no idea how to do. look up topics on youtube. Highest average out of 3 test was a 49 for my class. The assignments are long and hard and you are given very poor instructions and its vague so work with peers and TAs

Comment:

Even if you memorize the textbook you wont be able to get a 90 on the tests. The Programming assignments are tedious but can be done in around 12-15 hours. The tests on the other hand.... Get ready to spend hours trying to decipher the textbook only to find out that the professor put a problem you've never seen before on the test.

Pretty tough semester. It felt like he didn't have enough lecture time to cover the material he wanted to and tried to but ended up going over material too lightly. TOUGH class. You should know operating system structures before taking. Also you will have to learn a lot of this on your own, id suggest some "umass" vids on youtube.

We have our final tomorrow, I have nearly an absolute zero idea of what will be on it. The chapters he has given us to study are too broad and have not been tested on in the last test, which we got back yesterday.... It is ridiculous to be tested like this and have him simply "curve it" I would actually like to know this stuff.

I took Dr. Cheng for OS Fall 2014. He teaches good. Assignments are really long and very very difficult compared to other classes. There are 3 exams out of which first 2 exams were reasonable but last exam was horrifying. There is no point in studying for exam 3 as nothing similar would shows up on exam 3. Sample exam 3 on his website is useless.

Dr. Cheng is a very engaging professor. His tests get harder as the semester goes on. To study for his exams the example questions are helpful but not enough. Read the text before each lecture and do the programming assignments. This will help you with the exams. He curves at the end of the class.

While his lectures are engaging and interesting the course itself is considerably more difficult compared to the other OS professors. The assignments are harder and his exams are not forgiving. Also he requires you to buy his textbook which makes the course more confusing than it actually is. What he teaches and what he tests are different things.

He's probably one of the most intelligent professor at UH. I learned a lot from this course! TA is super helpful. Assignments are a little long, but definitely manageable! At the end he also gave the class a big curve. Class is not easy, definitely need to work for it.

Comment:

If you like OSes and want to be challenged, take his class. The projects are long and difficult but great learning experience. The tests are not too hard. Still, everyone generally gets low grades on tests and he curves them well. His teaching in class is very clear and organized. His CopyCenter notes aren't very good, but book 4 class is GREAT.

he is worst professor in computer scince.. If he offers fundemantal operating system, avoid him as far as you can. Also his TA is always worst among TA's. Both of them are horrible !!!
