Comment:
Not a good lecturer. He read straight off the powerpoint (which is a paraphrased version of the book). He is hard to understand and not good at explaining himself.

Comment:
He only reads off the powerpoints, which have huge amounts of information crammed into them. He goes through them too fast. The tests will have anything from the lecture notes or assigned textbook pages. Make sure to study those well. Inorganic 2 is one of the hardest in this major. This semester he gave no extra credit, but he curves anyway.

Comment:
In all honesty, the Science department at UH is not top-notch. That being said, many of the science courses you will take here are self-study and textbook based. Guloy, to be specific, gives pop-quizzes and his slides are filled with chunks of technical paragraphs. It is sometimes hard to hear him as he speaks so low. Rely on practice homework's.

Arnold Guloy is one of the finest chemistry teachers at the University of Houston. He is an extremely helpful professor who is very knowledgeable on the topics he teaches and answers questions fast. Of all the chemistry professor on campus he gives out the most extra credit for a total of 4 points. I highly recommend him for any chemistry student.

Comment:
Compare to other professors, I recommend Guloy because he gives out the most extra credit (4 points max). Smith and Carrasquillo only gave out 2 points max. I mostly self-study and go over the HW questions as much as I can (test ques. are similar). If you have the opportunity to sign up for chem workshop, please do, it helps!

Comment:
The lectures are extremely boring-- impossible to pay attention in class. Tests are impossible. Your best chance to get a passing grade on a test is to get as many practice tests from classmates as possible and understand how to do the problems on them (and memorize the conceptual questions). The 8 pop quizzes he gives are bonus.

Guloy is a nice guy and knows what he's talking about but he can't teach well and would just read off the slides. 94 points of your grade is dependent upon 94 questions on the exams and the remaining 6 are from weekly homework. BE PREPARED TO SELF STUDY. Attendance is not mandatory but it is extra credit from the random pop quizzes that he gives.

Comment:
I can tell Prof Guloy pours his heart out at lectures, but he is just not good explaining. Your best bet is to get the textbook and take notes directly from it rather than from the class, because is impossible to keep up with his slides. Do all weekly homeworks, and before tests do practice HWs and the practice exam, the questions are very similar.

Lecture is a waste of time, but it's mandatory to go because he will give pop quizzes randomly later through the semester. The pop quizzes are an easy way to get extra credit. Other than that, you're on your own. Without the textbook you will fail and make sure to get as many practice tests as possible. They come straight from the test bank pool.

Every time I went to class I just got more confused and his notes were all over the place. After the first test I stopped going to class completely and just used the time to study and I did much much better! Honestly you won't win with any of the chem profs here now that bott is gone, but go to chem tutoring trust me it helps!!! Also do practice hw

Horrible teacher. He doesn't teach at all, only repeats what is on his power point- which is just a word for word of the textbook. You will have a better chance passing the class by just reading the book. EXTREMELY boring and rude. This class is strictly self taught, so good luck.

He reads from his slides for lectures, he does not know how to teach to students in a way they understand. It is important to go to class because he will give random pop quizzes almost every day. If you take this class, get ready to teach yourself with readings and online sources, his class will not prepare you AT ALL.

To anyone who take his class, make sure to know your contents on the test. Take practice test and all four of the attempts on the homework and learn the content through it. They will help you greatly on the test. Try taking some practice tests with your friends and you should get a B and up on the test. Be there in class for random pop quiz!

Very monotone but he gives many opportunities for extra credit. His power points aren't that bad compared to other professors... But they are painful to get through. He gives opportunities to take practice homework to prepare for tests and he is very understanding of situations. Nice guy.

He's really cute looking, like an uncle. His lectures are extremely boring, and he doesn't really stop to explain things. He reads off the slides, but he does try to give some yet minimal extra credit and is very kind towards students so I guess that's a plus.

Pros: Helpful when approached or emailed Lenient Gives extra credit in the form of Challenge Questions (Occasional, and dependent on the class) Cons: Lacking in teaching ability Presentations and slides are geared towards students who will be diving into biochemistry and OG chem next year Monotonic Barely does any examples in class

Guloy gives very monotoned lectures which is why I skipped alot or never paid attention to him. Although his lectures sucked, he did give some good materials to study before the tests. Unlike the other chem teachers, he opens up past HW so you can practice. Helped a lot since the test questions are nearly identical to the HW. Passible w/ self-study

He is a nice person and does try to help students but his teaching style is confusing. Lectures are not really helpful since he mostly reads off of the ppt. There is HW assigned every week so be prepared for that. Tests are really random. You will have to self study and do your own preparation for all the tests. Just hope you get an easy test bank.

He has really long lectures and reads straight from his Powerpoint. I mainly relied on the textbook and study groups in order to do well in this class. He's very knowledgable about chemistry, but he can't really teach it that well. This is pretty much a teach yourself kind of class.
