Comment:
Ok, here's the thing: none of Felton's classes are easy, especially if exams aren't your strong suit. But he is an absolutely brilliant professor who loves his field of study more than anything. Make sure to go to class (he takes attendance) and go to his office hours. If he knows you and sees you're interested, you will learn a TON and do well.

You probably don't have to go to class because its all in the text book. However he does have mandatory attendance so you have to go anyway. He obviously knows his stuff, and I defiantly recommend taking his class at least once if you are actually interested in Art History. Fair grader. A lot of memorization involved which is not fun.

Very nice, but quite boring. Lecture based, no one ever talked but to ask questions. Mandatory attendance made me drop the course. I accumulated 4 absences and from that alone, had to drop the course. Too much reading, no discussion. He was very sweet though, albeit old school strict.

I've taken two classes with Professor Felton. He's helpful, engaging, and very kind. He might seem stern at first, but he's genuinely caring about his students' learning. He's also a really fair grader. You just need to memorize.

I'm not sure what everyone else is talking about, this class is so difficult and prof. Felton gives no help or advice at all. The lecture is fascinating and I would have loved to audit the course but if you are doing it for a grade be prepared to memorize hundreds of artworks recite them on an exam. That's your entire grade. Good luck.

This class is fabulous although daunting especially for an older student. Professor Felton will keep you mesmerized. I especially loved the way that history came together in unexpected areas like religion and culture...take this class!

I took both Felton's 242 and 140 class in one semester...not exactly a walk in the park come finals time, but the classes in itself were okay. When it came to studying, I relied solely on the textbooks and I didn't feel as if it mattered whether or not you actually paid attention in class...just don't come late to class or have a bad attendance.

Pretty ridiculous: could've learned this class pretty much exclusively from the textbook. His lectures were monotonous and boring. He knows his stuff, but teaches this class as if it's still a full year long. There is too much material to learn per exam for a semester long class. He was also rather disorganized and it cost me a lot.

This is the worst class I have ever taken. Felton speaks in almost a monotone, and all the exams are essay exams, where you are expected to reiterate everything he has told you. All the readings are in the library, inaccessible regularly to me, a UMass student. He made Baroque Art boring, and it was a chore to stay awake in this class.

This is probably the worst class I took at Smith. If you can learn just from lectures that you could take this class, if you are like me and like mostly discussions, you will be miserable. Also he only covers up to Baroque. It's not really a Western survey.

I love Craig Felton. I was very intimidated by him at first because recalls old-school profs, but he's losened up and let us see his funny and excitable side. And now he's even my major advisor. His love of Renaissance art is infectious, and his sweater vest over a tie ensembles is the cutest. I highly recommend taking a Renaissance class with him!

He's a nice guy, so I feel bad saying this, but this was my most boring class of the semester. I thought it would be hard to make Italian Ren. Art boring, but apparently not. I got a good grade and it wasn't a hard class - but I had to keep pinching myself to stay awake during it.

Felton did a miserable job teaching intro to western art this semester. He was repetitive and not in the least bit analytical. It was very disappointing.
