Comment:
I'm pretty sure Sherr knows the plot of every opera by heart. He's funny and makes the class interesting. However, he's a pretty harsh grader. I ended up deciding to take his class pass/fail. I'm really glad I did b/c I had a chance to enjoy the class rather than worrying about my grade. Also, you get to see an opera at the Met!!

Comment:
Class is set-up like a lecture for 20 people. The material is interesting, & Sherr has a sense of humor that is integrated in lectures, which are dry. Grading is very odd; tends to take off .2pts for correct answers. Exams are very detail-oriented on the 10 lb book. 1 Paper which is graded harshly & subjectively. Killed my GPA bc I usually get A's

Amazing. He took my love for opera and greatly improved it. It takes a while to get used to him -- at first he may seem boring and monotonous. Also, he is hilarious.

Comment:
Prof. Sherr was extremely knowledgeable about the subject of opera history, and although perhaps his sense of humour is an acquired taste, if you understand him, he is hillarious! It does pay off to do the listenings, though most of the material in the text is covered by the lecture.

Professor Sherr can be kind of strange sometimes, but if you have the chance, TAKE REACTING TO THE PAST. You will improve your writing, debating, and public speaking skills, make friends, learn a lot about history in a really engaging way, and have a lot of fun. TAKE IT.

He's a really nice teacher and the class subject matter is interesting, but his lectures can be boring and repetitive. He is a pretty easy grader. You get a lot of points in his class just for effort.

I received an A- but still wouldn't recommend him. He is nasty, condescending, arrogant, appears to not like women, and is clearly displeased at being at a women's college. Stay away.

Knowledgable but his arrogance stands in the way of his effectiveness in classroom.
