Do not take this class. I have always made A's in History classes and this class is just way too hard. I made C's on all his tests. If you can take anyone else take them before you take Hays.

Just don't take this class. It's a terrible experience. Lectures aren't interesting. He often puts in his opinions which is annoying. He grades his tests VERY hard. On one test where I made a low B, he wrote "very good." Really? Never take this class.

I had become interested in US history, recently. I understand now why there were only eight students that stayed in Dr Hayes class. He does not want or like for you to comment or have input into the lecture. He would do much better if he kept his personal politics and dislike of white, conservative Calvinist Christians out of the classroom.

Worst teacher I've ever had. Will not help you in any way. Tests are not at all what he says they will be on. I got a C in the class, but when I averaged my grades, I was supposed to have a B. I didn't argue with it though just because I didn't want to talk to him anymore. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS.

Hays is a nice guy but lectures are boring and hard to follow. The tests are difficult. He expects the essay to sound like it came straight from the book. He does however let you write a research paper to replace a bad exam grade. 3 exams and 2 quizzes. I recommend getting the book, but I only used it to study for the vocab part of the test.

Hays is a really nice guy and I enjoyed his class very much this semester. His class is hard however, so studying is crucial. If you attend class, take notes, and study for the tests, you should be fine. He also gives an extra credit paper to replace lowest test grade.

Hardest class I've taken so far. Lectures can be hard to follow and you're own your with taking notes. Very nice guy and willing to help, but tests are impossible. Attendance counts as 10% of final grade, 3 tests, one research paper to replace lowest test grade. Beyond stressful..

terrible teacher. got off topic every class. use a power point but never followed it or changed the slides. only two exams and two quizzes and a final made up your grade. test where very hard. study guide for tests sucked and was of no help. he expect you to remember every date and a lot of details. multiple sources are needed to answer test

he's the worst teacher ever. his lecture does not go with the book its hard to pay attention/ be fast enough to write down everything he says. you have to know 40 terms inside an out to write a paragraph about 3 of them on his tests. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN

This was a relatively difficult class only because his lecture moves really quickly and is entirely verbal. I would recommend recording the lecture on your computer in case you miss something. His exams are only hard because there's really no criteria for how to do the name and define section. I'm a Junior History Major and haven't made an A yet.

He is a bad teacher His voice is so annoying.Attendance is mandatory, however his class is useless. His lectures will not help you on the test and I didn't even buy the book. The day before the test he will review the essay questions, so make sure you take notes then.To pass the test know the terms and essay. The class isn't hard if your not stupid.

For an American history teacher he is sure pushing his own personal politics. If you don't agree with his views you just got B in the class regardless of your performance with his material. Very stuck on Howard Zinn as a personal mentor and point of view.if you are the least bit conservative find another prof. prefers to see the US through Markism

Shoves his opinions at you. He does not give 100% on attendance even though he takes it every day and you may not miss a day. He is not clear about what will be on his test. Half of what he talks about is not on his test. He does do a research paper to replace a test grade, but he did not read them. He gave everyone in the class the same grade.

agree with everything below. he is an extremely funny guy and enjoy coming to class to hear him talk but dont agree on a lot of stuff he talks about. hes pretty hard expecially when your not really interested in a lot of prehistoric history. essay questions are never easy and usually will not recieve a decent grade.

If you like a professor that teaches based on opinion hes your guy! Does give a terms list to help study for the exams however the essay questions are too broad. This is a history class, so should be taught on fact, not opinion. Will not be taking Hays again. Class was pretty easy. Essays are based on discussion from class.
