Great professor and so adorable! He is clearly intelligent and passionate about African history and in order to succeed in this course you should be too. This is an advanced class where he lectures with limited notes on the board so you have to be independent in your note taking. One quiz, a midterm, final, and term paper.

Jok is super smart and very passionate about Africa but extremely hard to understand. He lectures every class for the entire time without powerpoints or writing full sentences on the board. You really have to be tuned in 100% of the time due to the amount of information and his accent. He expects everyone to remember everything he says as well.

This class is graded on 3 things, and if you fail them you fail the class. It is only lectures, and you are expected to absorb all the information he gives you through them. No powerpoints, no nothing. Spare yourself and do not take this class.

Jok is very smart, adorable, has a good sense of humor and doesnt really assign homework. If u go to class, take very detailed notes, participate and go to office hours, then ull do fine. i did that and got an A on the midterm and im an ok student. But I guess it really depends on how interested you are in African history cuz his lectures are long

This is not an 'easy' class and it can seem unorganized because he doesn't use power points that cover everything like many professors. That being said, he really knows the material, is absolutely hilarious, and a great professor. If you're willing to go to class, take notes and learn in a different way, definitely take him! Really an awesome guy

Extremely high expectations. Gives about 25-30 essay questions to study for the test. Disorganized method of teaching. Hard to study because he is all over the place. EXTREMELY passionate and intelligent but expects too much of his students. Work hard to get a B. In the beginning of the semester it was hard to understand him because of his accent

Really intelligent guy, terrible conduction of class. There's no chronological organization to his lectures, making it impossible to study for tests/quizzes. Study guides comprise of roughly 30 questions that ALL must be answered/memorized at an ESSAY length. Overall, he has very unrealistic expectations for a core required class. Very disappointed

I was really interested in what this course had to offer, but I was disappointed in the ways that the info was presented it me. The class lacked the necessary organization that I think is necessary for optimal learning. This class may work for you if you're patient and flexible, it didn't work for me.

I really enjoyed his class. You definately have to work. Come to class, because his lectures are what you need to know, take lots of notes, study hard before the tests, and dont wait until the last minute on the paper. He is funny, passionate, extremely intelligent, and helpful. Go to his office hours, the guy is a genius. I really recommend him.

Previous posters' comments have summed up his class, but here is some background on Jok. He is originally from Sudan. He is highly educated, and a published author. He recently sold his house here to start a school in Sudan, which is taught under a tree by three teachers. He is a great scholar, and an amazing teacher.

He is so Bomb! He's chill and hilarious. He wants you to do well. get on his good side. He helps but it is a lot of material. Though he's cool, his class is no joke. You learn a lot and he knows exactly what he's talking about. If you take good notes, you don't need the book but it is helpful if you need the extra aid.

Modern Africa could have been an interesting class, however he has a thick accent and jumps around a lot. Very interesting person and a really nice guy but hard to follow and hard quizzes/tests.

I am only a month into the semester, so I could end up failing this course for all I know. But up to this point, it has been fantastic. If you are enrolled in LMU truly for the sake of learning/ gaining knowledge, take this class. The research paper is intimidating, but Jok's experiences and wisdom make up for it. I am honored to have met him.

Awesome professor, he's a really interesting guy and knows his stuff. Quizzes are hard but worth practically nothing, just do well on the term paper and you'll do fine. However, his lectures can get extremely boring and tend to wander. Make sure you're interested in the subject before taking this class

Not as hard as some of the reviews would make it seem. A lot of reading, so it's hard to get all of it done. But reviewing using the textbooks and class notes will make a world of difference when studying. In fact, it was my highest grade of the semester! Subject matter is interesting and important to know, although it can get a little dull.

Really enlightening class. Jok's personal experience adds a lot of texture to his lessons. Great sense of humor makes class more interesting. Some previous ratings are right, at times lectures stray on the monotonous side. Overall I would recommend this class, the info i learned was truly valuable.

Can we say BORING?? Jok Jok is a nice guy but a rather uninspired teacher. Every class is a long, dull lecture packed full of way too much information and on topics I never found particularly interesting. It's pretty easy to get away with a B (just two tests and a paper), but I tell you this class was a CHORE to sit through. A huge disappointment.

Not the easiest grader in the world but you learn so much. Truly one of the most informative classes I have ever taken. It sheds so much light onto current subjects. He is an amazing person. Always seems happy despite a lot of the**** he's been through.
