You need to do a lot of learning on your own, his style of teaching can be difficult for many to understand. Not great vibes from him. Will give extra credit assignments if you ask. Pretty tough grader compared to other theory teachers.

Jon picks on students who don't understand the material. He also ignores students he doesn't like and gives them bad grades not letting them make up the points for credit. He doesn't teach the material well at all and goes on tangents for no reason while expecting us to comprehend the material. Would not recommend take the other teacher. 100 100

I took this entry level class hoping to learn the fundamentals of music. Instead of focusing on helping students learn about music in what is supposed to be an entry level class, he talks condesendingly to students unfamiliar with the material and then goes on to babble about his supposed past experience with irreverent famous people.

At first this professor seemed very Okay due to his requirements for you to pass the class, but as the week continued, he noticed individuals who were more advanced and already knew the material so he went up to their level, now 1 month left of the semester, he is teaching like if we were music prodigys in piano and part of the Santa Cruz symphony!

Personally, I know music pretty well so I thought this class would be a breeze. Doing Certificate of Merit Theory I knew everything before entering this class. The syllabus grading system contradicts what he says. Half of the class failed the midterm, including myself. Graded many things wrong, although they were definitely correct. Overall cocky.

Truly amazing professor! The best teacher I have had in years! He is very honest, and helpful. He explains everything clearly, and is very respectful. Also, if he gets sick, he does not cancel the class. Instead, he gets a substitute.

Not a very good teacher in general. Had told our class that it would be stupid to become a music major since nothing can really come of it. Seems very uninterested in his own subject.

Took his summer class. Lots of work crammed into a short period of time, but if you put forth some effort an A is very attainable. Very fair grader, if he sees you tried hard he will reward you. I definitely recommend taking any of his classes.

I took jons' class in the 2007 winter session. This class made me realize exactly where the music of jazz came from ,I loved this class &he is a wonderful teacher,But he hates Kenny G and will let you know it .He cracks me up .TAKE IT

Jon is very clear and straightforward. His syllabus lays out exactly what he expects out of the student so I had no problem figuring out what kind of grade to expect from him. He is very helpful and open to questions. Through his class, I developed an ongoing appreciation of music. Wonderful!!

John Nordgren is a man who cares about music and the music community. To teach someone to play an instrument is a very arduous task (mostly because students don't practice enough) he does so in a very calm, easy-handed manor. A great guy.
