The class is easy and simple. Show up and pay attention; you'll probably do fine. Dr. Zhang/Ms. Yanan (TA) are nice and passionate, but for me, sometimes I'd zone out after an hour and the last 45 minutes of class I spend looking at stuff online. I reread (skimmed) a lot outside of class, so it wasn't a big deal. The homework is easy as well.

I've had Dr. Zhang for four classes and he's also my department head. His classes require tedious effort and are very fast paced. He's one of the most knowledgeable CHIN professors I've ever had. He takes care of you in class and also outside of class. 10/10 would recommend

Awesome professor who is passionate about what he teaches and genuinely puts effort in helping his students learn. He helps explain a lot of the dense meanings in Chinese Literature and brings enthusiasm by telling jokes, stories and involving students in discussions. There is a lot of reading material and analysis but hey its Lit., I enjoyed it.

The professor is nice but there is so much to read and exams are hard. Readings are hard to understand because all of them were translated from Chinese. I would avoid this class and take other literature class.

Classical Chinese is really tricky, but Zhang Laoshi does a very good job at explaining each character and sentence means, and even provides helpful practice sheets for the tests. He tells a lot of funny stories and jokes, and is also very friendly with everyone. The only problem with the class is that he does not always follow the syllabus.

Zhang is really enthusiastic and he makes an effort to involve his students in discussions. He also helped us understand the history, religions, background behind the literary works we were studying. Keep up with the homework assignments and do the readings before class! That way, you get involved in discussions and do well on the exams!

Literature presented in class were of morally and sometimes satirical stories of Ancient China. Class was FANTASTIC and Karl Zhang made it interesting with his weird sense of humor and lecture. He does speak his native tongue often, just to make a point, but he is understandable. Attend class from time to time and write down main lecture points!

Probably the best foreign language teacher I've had in my life! He is very funny and makes class entertaining. I couldnt believe how non-intimidating he made Chinese seem. His class is easier to grasp if you have a prior interest to the language, and sometimes his accent is hard to understand, but he will do whatever possible to help you out. :)

So far the class is great. He is really funny and tries to keep the class entertained even it though it last two hours. I really enjoy this class. Chinese is not an easy language to learn, but I think with Professor Zhang it is not only possible, but entertaining as well.

I loved Chinese lit with him. SUCH a nice guy. I do have to agree he has a strange sense of humor, but I found it hilarious. Participate (by answering questions he already answered the previous class)and he will adore you and shower you with praises. Easy class, but definitely still need to study. Learned a lot too.

Prof. Zhang is a good guy, but he has an odd sense of humor. The class material is great, and he knows a lot about it and makes reading classical characters interesting. He can be confusing, and sometimes it's hard to understand his questions. However, his grading system is good, and his class is definitely worthwhile, if you can handle his jokes.

I'm gonna have to say he's a somewhat biased teacher with some very conservative views on certain things... Could appear to be a bit offensive and disrespectful towards some students (depending on where you're from and your ethnicity ) Overall though, he was a great teacher. Real knowledgeable but i wish he could've made class more fun.

Awesome professor! Want an easy A while actually learning a lot of things about Chinese Literature? Then you definitely should take his class. He likes participation in class discussions, and most people are shy, so impress him with your thoughts! Homework, exams, and final paper are a piece of cake.

If you participate in class, he will love you. I thought this class was going to be boring but he made it so awesome! There's a homework every week on what we talked about in class; if you only write down the simplest answers he will still give you an A. I seriously think it is impossible to get a B or lower unless you simply don't do anything.

I was SO disappointed when he wasn't teaching CHIN 102 this semester, because his CHIN 101 class was so much fun, and in laying the cornerstones for language development, few could have done a job as well as Zhang-laoshi. His patience is nigh-infinite so long as you aren't hostile or arrogant, and he takes pains to guide you through the material.
