I love this lady (not like that, in a grandmotherly way). she's super nice, and the class was a breeze. I never even bought the book, and still got a B.

This professor assigns way too much reading. She does not adhere to the syllabus and she quizzes to death. Her instructions are vague with regards to papers and she offers little to no guidance on with regards to what she expects. The exams are also ridiculous because she expects so much. Got my fingers crossed for an A, but not holding my breath

Lots of reading! She's great if you like reading and listening to her comment on different perspectives of history. You don't get into the good literature like Poe and Irving until about 2/3 into the semester. Quizzes are important, so read and show up for class. Definitely study with a group for the test.

If you are religious, you will enjoy this class. If you are not, like myself, this class is a chore and a pain. For 80% of the year we read sermons, puritan diaries, all this stuff that isn't literature. That's the way she likes it, she makes sure we know that. By the time we get to the actual lit like Poe or Rip Van Winkle, you'll be BURNT. AVOID.

Unclear syllabus + instructstions. Grade is based only on two tests, quizzes. Gives opportunity for extra credit, but is unrealistic in grading. Normally I receive A's + B's, I was taking six classes and working part-time, got A's and B's in all the other classes. Do not take her if you aren't a huge teachers pet.

I took 3 lit classes from Dr Baum. She is an expert in her field. I had to read 8 novels for a Summer term (Grad-level). I did read everything. I wish I could take one of her classes every year. I honestly love this Prof. After her classes, I can sit down and rapidly read novels. She taught me to appreciate thick novels. I like her assessments too.

She is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. She was never at her office for office hours even when I had questions and it was finals week. If she e-mail her any questions she is rude when she replys. She somewhat flaky and her syllabus is EXTREMELY unclear. She gives better grades to the students she likes and dismisses other students.

SHE DOES KNOW WHAT SHE IS TEACHING BUT UNLESS YOU HAVE HOURS OF FREE TIME EVERY WEEK AND ARE VERY VERY INTERESTED IN LITERATURE DO NOT TAKE. IT IS EXCURIATINGLY BORING. YOU WILL DISCUSS THE SAME AUTHORS FOR WEEKS AND STILL NOT GAIN ANY MORE INTEREST. ONLY TAKE IF YOU ARE A LIT NERD.

Very bright professor and not at the least bit boring! I should have worked harder, but I still got a C- without much effort.. She is witty, and most likely you can do great in her class if you simply TRY a little :) I reccomend!

I'm gonna be completely honest here. This class was horrible. You will read, read, read, and read. Unless you love Puritan, and very dry Literature, do NOT take this woman. I will say that she seems to enjoy what she's teaching, however, killer amount of work, and unfair grading, made this class BAD

Great professor, wealth of information, wants you to learn, quizzes you on what you have learned, facilitates discussion, lively, not boring...really helps you learn. Has a slight agenda, liberal, of course.

She is by far one of the best professors here (or at any university). Her assignments really make you absorb the material and are even very interesting to complete. Further, she is very personable and has a great (dry) sense of humor. Loved her!

Dr. Baum is a great teacher. I learned more about the true American literary canon than I could have dreamed. She teaches you about ethnocentricity. Thank goodness, there is more to America than just Puritan literature. She taught me that. A++
